You are meant to avoid expressing, but if you have to then just do enough to make yourself feel more comfortable (otherwise your signal your body to produce more milk). You are meant to massage your boobs to avoid any milk duct blockages which could result in mastitis. You can take ibuprofen to relieve the pain.
