Friday, 7 August 2015. Scilly Pelagic no 2. My second evening pelagic from St Marys (setting off at 5.00pm) and it was mostly about the familiar 'ever present' seabirds of the area. Starting off with a good few Manx Shearwater. Only minutes in, near St Agnes! A fly-by Arctic Skua. And cracking views of Bonxies. Taking on the gulls in the wake of the boat! Sunday, 9 August 2015. Scilly pelagic no 4 - Great Shearwater. A mizzle /drizzle start to the morning but it eventually cleared up and three Great Shearwaters put in appearance, the first two coming within range. Here's the first one. Don't you just hate wave creasts! The second bird came within frame filling distance! See what I mean! Just when I thought it couldn't get better than this, tomorrow was about to prove me wrong! Monday, 10 August 2015. Scilly pelagic no 5 - The late Great Shear Show! Another great evening on Sapphire, predictably unpredictable and whilst we remained Wilson's-less, there was plenty of excitement in store as the evening wore on and scent of chum brought the tubenoses in! Tuesday, 23 September 2014. Kilnsea - Masked Shrike etc. I'd spent a long weekend in Scotland on plant duty noting the frenzied activity at Kilnsea with the discovery of a juv Masked Shrike! My first opportunity came on the Tuesday and with the crowds having died down, there were even parking spaces in the beach car park! Then down to business from the viewing point. The Masked Shrike. As ever, undaunted by distance, all the converters went on to try an eke something out of the day? Venus Pool - Peregrine.

Trevor and Chris Bashford of Dolgellau are possibly the most fortunate Garden Birdwatchers in Wales. As previously reported they regularly have Hawfinches in their garden and have over the past few years read and photographed numerous colour ringed individuals, including a bird from the Forest of Dean last year. On Tuesday BTO ringers from the SCAN ringing group and RSPB staff at Ynys Hir caught and ringed 25 Barnacle geese from the increasing winter flock there. Barnacle geese breed in Greenland and Svalbard with small populations in Finland and Denmark, a large proportion of these winter in Britain and Ireland.
