Oh, for the love of chant! Random musings of a Catholic musician and liturgist. April 17, 2014. I wanted to share this very recent setting by Luke Mayernik of the text for the Mandatum (foot washing) on Holy Thursday. We will be using it tonight – it is great because it can be fairly short or quite long (over 7 minutes! If needed. Also, it is just a great choral setting! 8220;I give you a new commandment: that you love one another as I have loved you.”. This entry was tagged Liturgy. Fr Columba Kelly OSB.

Chant and Jazz | Oh, for the love of chant!

Oh, for the love of chant! Random musings of a Catholic musician and liturgist. December 19, 2013. There is a lot in common with the oral tradition of jazz, and the “toolkit” of licks a musician must have ready, practiced, heard, etc to be able to improvise well. It is not about intellectually thinking through every single note of a solo, it is about the idea, the motive, about the group of notes. The compositional methods have a lot in common. Oh, for the love of chant! Random musings of a Catholic musician and liturgist. March 9, 2014. De Profundis – Out of the Depths. This piece is on my mind at lot this week as we are singing this for a High Mass at the Basilica of Holy Hill next Thursday…enjoy the awesome Gloria Patri at the end! Psalm 130 is a beautiful Psalm text for Lent. In my small-group yesterday, we talked a lot about the psalms, especially how great they are to pray with. Psalms make great scripture study! In vocem deprecationis meæ.

While sorting through old video cassettes the other day, I blew the dust off the jacket of the 1994 movie ‘Mesmer’ staring Alan Rickman. I always enjoy a period film and watching it nudged me to do a bit of sleuthing on the character behind the film. This sound was thought by some to have curative powers. Others rumoured that.
