Okay first of all, these roadrunners are everywhere but exceedingly difficult to photograph:
Exploring Tucson - On Z Road
http://on-z-road.weebly.com/domestic-blog/exploring-tucson
Today it was more job applications and then a hike up Tumamoc Hill. This "hill" is a mountain just west of town that has a research facility on top where scientists monitor the wildlife, changing climate, and the desert. The 1.5 mile road to the top of the mountain (600 tall feet from its base) is closed during the working day, but open to the public before 7:30am and after 5:30pm Monday-Friday. It's a great workout and provides spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and city.
Desert Museum - On Z Road
http://on-z-road.weebly.com/domestic-blog/desert-museum
Today we went to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. Just west of Tucson. It was $20.50 per person, which is, speaking as someone who comes from the land of free museums, absurd. However, the museum was very well put together, with kind, knowledgeable docents showing off all sorts of desert wonders. The drive there was also stunning. The museum is in a valley, and so we had to drive over and through some mountains, which opened out onto this desert view. Here we have two white-tailed deer licking each other.
Last day in New Mexico - On Z Road
http://on-z-road.weebly.com/domestic-blog/last-day-in-new-mexico
Last day in New Mexico. We didn't do much today, mostly got prepared for our drive to Tucson tomorrow. We did go to the top of Fort Marcy. To get a good view of Santa Fe, walked around downtown, and hiked a bit on the Dale Ball. The view from Fort Marcy. Theo Zizka, craftsman/ designer/ writer, and spouse Amelia Raines, librarian, travel West from Ann Arbor, Michigan to find new land to settle. Create a free website.
Santa Fe - On Z Road
http://on-z-road.weebly.com/domestic-blog/santa-fe
I lied about going to Taos today. Yeah, I know, pretty mean of me, but we wanted to take a break from driving. Instead we walked around downtown Santa Fe. We are staying in an airbnb on Canyon st, art gallery central. We had breakfast at the Teahouse. Which was playing Depeche Mode. 6 tea at the Teahouse, along with $10 oatmeal and $7 granola. We learned pretty quickly that Santa Fe is for rich old people. Santa Fe has a law that all buildings must be in the Pueblo style. No, seriously. If you have time ...
Gem Show - On Z Road
http://on-z-road.weebly.com/domestic-blog/gem-show
Little did we know, coming to Tucson in late January, that the city goes bananas for two weeks showcasing gems, rocks, and fossils from around the globe. Yes, the Tucson Gem and Mineral Showcase. Goes from January 30th to February 14th this year, and it has begun. And it is everywhere. Every empty space in the city (parking lots, convention centers, hotels) is crammed full of vendors. Today we only walked around one part of the show, the Pueblo Gem Show. As you can see. here. Hold on a sec. There we go&#...

Last Day in Ireland. We then headed into Dublin for our last day in Ireland. Megan and Pat went to the Guinness Storeroom. While the rest of us went to the . National Museum of Archaeology. This museum has an amazing amount of neolithic, iron age, and bronze age objects, not to mention items from Ireland's viking and early christian eras. Mesolithic fish traps, Clowanstown, Co. European Cars in Ireland - Over Z's
http://z-abroad.weebly.com/blogging-abroad/european-cars-in-ireland
European Cars in Ireland. Let's talk about cars! Above are the automakers that sell in the USA. Growing up in DC, the most common cars were Toyota, Honda, and then some American brands like Chevy and Ford. Just moving to Michigan provided a stark contrast- the proportion of Japanese brands to American dropped dramatically, and I started to notice Pontiac all around. There was the occasional, but rare Mitsubishi or Suzuki, but now that we've moved to Arizona, there are quite a few more of those too. A Ger...

Kilkenny, The Farm, Rock of Cashel, And Cobh. Sorry about the lack of updates the past two days- we were on the Dingle peninsula, where there is apparently no Wi-Fi. But I'm back and I'm no longer recording this travelogue day-by-day. Instead, I'm opting for region-by-region. Last time on Over-Z's, we had just arrived in Kilkenny for the night. We stayed at a lovely B&B in downtown Kilkenny, right next to the Medieval Mile. Which was fun to walk around. When it came time for Kathleen's (the youngest sist...

Let's talk about chairs. That is, after all, why I went to Denmark, to study Scandinavian furniture design and to build my own chair with the principles that I learned. Me and my wood. Photo credit: Nadine Foik. My first concept, a chair deep and wide enough to sit cross-legged. This chair includes large, flat armrests that can double as table space for food or writing. Finn Juhl's "Japan Chair": simple, elegant, reportedly comfortable. The concept in evolution. It was at this point that I realized how m...

Second Day in Ireland. Once out of the airport, we drove to Glendalough. A 6th century medieval monastery. We saw some local wildlife on the walk to the actual monastic settlement:. This deer was not at all afraid of the people around it, but did eventually run away when a group of children kept almost poking it. The actual monastery was fun to walk around in, with lots of colorful lichen and attractive ruins. I was likin' the lichen. Here Amelia is walking clockwise on top of the Caher. The Chi Rho page...

If you have enjoyed this blog, I encourage you to check out the blog that I have started for my thesis project. It is sure to update a heck of a lot more than this one does. Whirlwind Study Tour (Part B). The morning started casually with breakfast at the hostel. Then we were off to the Vasa Museum. The exterior of the Vasa museum. If you ever get a chance to visit Stockholm, do go to the Vasa museum. Again, awful exposure. Here are a couple students near the very very tip of the ship. We know what they ...

There are two buildings connected by a hall. Here's the front entrance. Not very glamorous, no. The bent wood then needs to dry in its form or mould for a great deal of time. Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle - Over Z's
http://z-abroad.weebly.com/blogging-abroad/giants-causeway-and-dunluce-castle
Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle. Today we drove northeast to the coast and the Giant's Causeway. The Giant's Causeway is made up of over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, formed 50-60 million years ago when a pool of fluid, molten basalt cooled, contracted, and began to crack. It fractured horizontally in a hexagonal pattern and vertically straight down, creating the natural hexagonal steps we see today. Here, have a direct quote from Wikipedia about the legends behind the Giant's Causeway:. We the...

Slea Head Drive - Over Z's
http://z-abroad.weebly.com/blogging-abroad/slea-head-drive
For our full day on the Dingle peninsula, we took a portion of the Slea Head Drive. Which is a route all along the coast of the peninsula. There are great views, but the main attractions are the hundreds of neolithic to medieval-age buildings. We started the drive by visiting the closest beach, which was deserted. Next, we went to the Celtic and Prehistoric Museum. This museum housed the largest, most complete mammoth skull in Ireland. Included in the ticket price was SHEEP PETTING OH BOY. Here's an old ...

Okay first of all, these roadrunners are everywhere but exceedingly difficult to photograph:. But on to the main topic, construction archaeology. The law of this land states that any development or construction must be preceded by an archaeological survey to protect artifacts and evidence of ancient peoples. Why? The be-cowboyhatted man center stage is standing on a 2500 to 3000 year old farm, complete with human footprints preserved in now rock-hard mud. Note that the website states that the model is fr...
