Forms of the Condition. Occurs when there is a separation or opening of the lip and/or the roof of the mouth which is the palate. There can be a combination of a cleft lip and cleft palate. The lip and the roof of the mouth usually fuse together during the first few months of the pregnancy, but the incomplete development of the lip and roof of the mouth is the result of a cleft.

Our son Riley was born on August 31, 2004 with a Complete Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate. We were not prepared for his birth condition and so needless to say, we were terrified. The Toronto Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) took us under their wing and it has been an amazing journey ever since! We felt compelled to share our story with you in hopes that we can help overcome any or some of your fears. If we can reach just one family, then our efforts on this site are well worth it.
