Avg adult needs 8.4 hours. Why do we sleep? Biological clock: suprachiasmatic nucleus. If SCN lesioned, no sleep rhythm. Will persist without cues of light, darkness, clocks. Entrained by “zeitgebers” (like bright light). Theta and alpha waves. Drowsiness, fragmented images. Roller coaster through these stages.
