The cycleway will continue on from the Pauanui Waterways boardwalk. around the waters edge where possible for 25kms and meet up with the footpath at the Tairua School. The Hopper Rock Story. TThe Hikuai District Trust in conjunction with the Coromandel Coastal Walkways decided jointly that a large rock would be a suitable monument to the memory of Ian Hopper . The history of Hikuai from the time of European settlement is founded on kauri timber, gum and gold. About 8 million years prior to this the landscape was subjected to violent volcanic activity, responsible today to the unusual mountain formations. Resource Consent has been granted to take the Trail as far as Duck Creek. The Hikuai District Trust is the registered trust that was the vehicle that ran the very successful Concert in the Orchard which raised $150,000.00 for the local community. We think the cycleway will be an asset to the community. In part of the earlier district plan the community said:. A picturesque river that we have no easy access to. This wonderful asset should be developed, especially in the lower regions below the old bridge.
