The Upside-Down Table Saw: The Workbench (Part 1)
http://upsidedowntablesaw.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-workbench-part-1.html
The Upside-Down Table Saw. Monday, January 6, 2014. The Workbench (Part 1). If I'm going to be a woodworker, I need a Workbench! Pieces cut to rough length and width. The bench design I mentioned above also cut a crucial corner: instead of cutting mortises for each joint, the second layer of lumber was cut into shorter segments in order to create notches in the legs to accept the stretchers. Rather than cut a dozen mortises, I decided to use that technique. In the picture, you can see what I mean. Once t...

The Upside-Down Table Saw: Get Sickworking Week
http://upsidedowntablesaw.blogspot.com/2014/02/get-sickworking-week.html
The Upside-Down Table Saw. Wednesday, February 26, 2014. So I wrote a piece for Get Woodworking Week, in which I urged people to get over whatever fears they have or inadequacies they perceive and make something. I talked about being sick, which I was, and about how I was eager to get back in the shop. Turned out I was fighting bronchitis. Not fun. With new content - I think I'm now subscribed to more than two dozen woodworking channels! Wednesday, February 26, 2014. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Listen to the gentle chisels gliding through wood, the swish of the hand-plane as curls of semi-transparent shavings flow off the workbench. The Upside-Down Table Saw: January 2014
http://upsidedowntablesaw.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
The Upside-Down Table Saw. Monday, January 20, 2014. And Now For Something Completely Different. SPAX screws are your friend. So, my Christmas vacation ended, and I'm now back to the daily grind. Shop time is now at a premium, so when an opportunity arose last weekend to make some sawdust, I jumped at it. The only problem was that I'd only have a couple of hours. What to do? Should I continue with The Workbench? Naturally, I bit off more than I could chew and settled on installing a lumber rack. I starte...

The Upside-Down Table Saw: Fancy Tea Light Holder
http://upsidedowntablesaw.blogspot.com/2014/07/fancy-tea-light-holder.html
The Upside-Down Table Saw. Wednesday, July 9, 2014. Fancy Tea Light Holder. Since I earn my keep as a teacher, the end of the spring semester can be quite chaotic; add to that a rapidly growing first child, and (as I've said before) my shop time is often quite spread out. The magic of chamfer bits. And hand sanding. I then hit all the edges with a chamfer bit on my fancy new router table setup. A light chamfer everywhere but the bottom edges, where the chamfer was a full half inch. I sanded every...And I...

Monday, May 28, 2012. Six Degrees of Sauerkraut - Part LIV: Claude Larson. Like any good synthesist from the Glimmerlight, Klaus Netzle had an alias. Some thoughts on literature and philosophy. February 1, 2015. In search of lost time? Mark Rylance as Cromwell, in Kosminsky’s adaptation of Wolf Hall. Too many notes, says the philistine Emperor Joseph II to Mozart, in the film Amadeus. It’s quality work, there are simply too many notes. Just cut a few and it will be perfect! That’s one reason why the television adaptation of Wolf Hall is so pleasurable. As John Sutherland, reviewing episode one. Every scene, every word, advances the story. Have very go...

Tuesday, August 11, 2015. The Is No Cheating. I drive a lot for work. When I do, I tend to alternate my listening between audio books and podcasts. An audio book typically takes me between a few days and a week to finish. When I'm done with the book I pick back up with the podcasts. Because of this alternation, I'm sometimes a week or so behind in my podcasts. When I recently listened to Wood Talk #263. S wonderful opening comments. To put it in my words: There is no wrong way to woodwork. Welcome to Aug...

Where the last words are never yours. Tuesday, April 17, 2007. Why I WON'T Vote for John Edwards. I just read this. Article about John Edwards. Now, there are actually about a hundred different reasons why I wouldn't vote for him, but this article gives me several more to add to the list. It is exactly this type of two-faced politician that makes the average American totally disgusted by politics in general. On Edwards' campaign website, it lists " Eliminating Povert. So my political advice for Mr. E...

Musings, recipes, realizations, and joy. What’s so funny? August 9, 2015. When you’re a family of two teachers and two school-aged kids, summers are unbelievable. We swim, we play tennis, we play golf. We read, we nap, we bake. We build things out of Lego bricks, we visit friends, we take long walks together. It’s a glorious time of family bonding and celebrating, and I am ridiculously thankful for this gift. At times, however, the clutter and logistics of having all four of us home. Listen, building stu...
