Between 2000 and 2010 federal spending, measured in real dollars, increased by $1.2 trillion, a 52.5% increase. 89% of this increase, or roughly $1 trillion, came from Defense, Social Security/Medicare/Medicaid, and Unemployment/Food Stamps.
