Pompeii Then And Now. Thursday, January 12, 2017. The Temple of Apollo. This is Temple of Apollo (Tempio di Apollo) in Pompeii, Italy. My photo is taken looking north. Mt. Vesuvius cannot be seen, but is behind the temple a bit to the west (left) side. In front of the temple podium is a small travertine altar. Pompeii Then And Now: July 2016

http://pompeii-79ad.blogspot.com/2016_07_01_archive.html

Pompeii Then And Now. Saturday, July 2, 2016. House of the Tragic Poet. This is the Aedicula Lararium (shrine) in the peristyle of the House of the Tragic Poet. It is located in the North West end of the peristyle (garden) that is surrounded by columns on three sides. There is a niche (opening) in the Lararium. A Lararium is a shrine where the people of the household would make offerings to the household gods. I chose this instead of the dog mosaic, as it doesn't get much attention. It should. Pompeii Then And Now. Saturday, June 7, 2014. This is in the modern day town of Pompeii, Italy. I just left my hotel, Hotel Forum, which is across the street from the excavations, on Via Roma. I'm on the sidewalk south of the Ancient City of Pompeii. This is one of the 8 gates. It is the Nucerian Gate or Porta Nocera. The Necropolis is in the foreground. Sharon M. Wolf. Links to this post. Pompeii Then And Now: August 2015

http://pompeii-79ad.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Pompeii Then And Now. Saturday, August 15, 2015. This is Porta Nola (the Nola Gate) on the East end of Pompeii. I've done a post on it before. However, there is some great activity going on here, so I thought I'd write about it again. The Gate is called Porta Nola as it led to the town of Nola. At the top center of the gate, you can just about make out the head of Minerva. Perhaps she's there to protect travelers on their way. Sharon M. Wolf. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

http://pompeii-79ad.blogspot.com/2016_10_01_archive.html

Pompeii Then And Now. Tuesday, October 25, 2016. Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii. Mt Vesuvius looking quite stunning in the Spring. Spring was laying out her mantel of greens in so many shades and the mountain was boasting them all. Looking at Pompeii from above gives you a totally different perspective then when you are walking among it's wall and roads of stone. Mt. Vesuvius is still an active volcano and is monitored daily. Even though it's deadly, it's quite beautiful. Especially in the Spring.

Ancient Rome's 1st port is no longer a town full of merchants, sailors, and ancient Romans. It's now a large archaeological site just begging to be explored. While Pompeii is crowded and hard to maneuver about when the tours are in progress, Ostia is uncrowded. The mosaics and frescoes are Bellissimo! Care for a souvenir or two?

This blog is about the Roman Forum and Italy. Saturday, October 22, 2016. This is a mosaic in Ostia Antica, the first Port of Ancient Rome, in Italy. Some say it's a mosaic of the second port of ancient Rome: Portus. I took an amazing course on Portus. The lighthouse, pictured above, was modeled after the great Alexandria Lighthouse in Egypt. The lighthouse sat in an artificial harbor. It was built on Caligula's ship that transported an obelisk to Circus Maximus. Sharon M. Wolf. Sharon M. Wolf.
