On this very large canvas, I first laid out the image in graphite, then picked out the very darkest tones in acrylic. I then got as much of the boy detail in as possible with coloured pastels. I painted a thin wash all over the water area so as to create the mid tone and the started in on the detail of the large stones the boy was sitting on.

Large Spanish Horse in progress. Horse Gavilan De Frente. This is the original photo from Carol Pearson. Firsly I brightened it in paint shop pro. So I can see the effect that I want to paint. In order to make it stand out on the cavas. New Commission, 'Major Promise', (Dylan) belonging to Carol Pearson. Another day's work on this painting, the ears were very difficult to make out, so thank goodness for computers, I was able to enlarge the original photo so that I could just make out the lighter areas.

All images can be enlarged by clicking on them. And after a few little tweaks, and a signature, (which I normally forget) I literally held my breath and spray varnished the entire painting, first across and then from top to bottom. Hope you have enjoyed watching me paint this as much as I have enjoyed painting this wonderful horse 'Decreto'.

So I firsly lay down the background, sandboard is great for layering it will take umpteen layers and will allow you to put the very lightest highlights on top of the darkest areas in pastel, I do spray, right up until the final highlights as it does tend to dull the colour slightly. All finished, hope you like.

Large Spanish Horse in progress. Horse Gavilan De Frente. OK, this is the first sitting of the most beautiful Stallion called Tyrus,. Who very sadly died earlier this year. Over the past 3 days. I have laid down the background, sketched out the outline and have. Just laid down some very basic under painting around the face. Some more blending and underpainting on the face, just trying to get the tonal values correct. Managed to get a lot of blending of the face and started the underpainting of the ears.

This is much smaller than I usually do just wanted to try out Gouache and coloured pencils, really like them so far. Some more blending around and detail within the eyes. Got some detail into the fur today. Overview of the painting, still building on the depth of fur. No big change I'm afraid. just doing detail and painting in the greenery.

Large Spanish Horse in progress. Horse Gavilan De Frente. This is Dodger, this is about the limit as to detail in a photo I can see,. I think even this will be difficult. After sketching out the drawing, I then begin with the eyes,. This will only be a pencil sketch, not a painting. Nearly there just a little tweaking on the nose, and then a quick work. Over the entire picture to bring it together a bit more. Dodger, all finished, darkened the darks, lightened the lights, hope you like :).
