Artists of the South Asian diaspora in Britain have shaped a rich, engaging artistic legacy, which continues to surface in challenging and surprising ways. Many of these artists have been exhibited publicly and achieved glowing critical acclaim, although their life stories, and the historical record of their making and displaying art have yet to be fully documented and recognised historically. How it all began. SADAA started life as SALIDAA, the South Asian Diaspora Literature and Arts Archive. It was formed in 1999 by a group of concerned academics, experts and practitioners of South Asian literature and arts in response to a growing concern that priceless works by South Asian writers and artists, work that informed the development of the creative arts in the UK after Partition, were disappearing or becoming inaccessible. The Garuda project in collaboration with the V&A Museum aims to raise awareness of Ram Gopal. 8216;s contribution to Indian dance in the UK. This project included the conservation of Gopal’s historic Garuda costume which has now been donated to the V&A’s collection. 1920s: Ram Gopal's first performances were in temples in south India.
