There has been the presence of the glass industry in Salem County New Jersey since the early 18. Century, although not continuous. ï ï ï. There was a gap of about 80 years through the early 19. Century. ï ï. The first glass production started in 1739, just north of Alloway, New Jersey, at the Wistarburgh Glass Works. ï ï ï. In 1863, D. P. Smith, George Hires Jr., John Lambert, and Charles Hires invested $8,000 each, to established. The Quinton Glass Works for the manufacture of window, coach, and picture glass. ï ï ï. ALVA GLASS MANUFACTURING CO

In 1890, some out of work glass workers started a cooperative glass factory near Majorï s Wharf on Tilbury. This was a third glass factory operating in the city of Salem. The initial company was called Alva Glass Company, with Robert Torrens as President, and N. S. Fox treasurer, Joseph R. Westcott as superintendent, and John Fox, John Westcott, Henry Isler. When talking about the Elmer Glass Works, it must be remembered that there were two glass factories in Elmer. ï ï ï.
