SaturdaySilliness: The Old Man and the Books
http://saturdaysilliness.blogspot.com/2008/08/old-man-and-books.html
This Crazy Book World. Saturday, August 30, 2008. The Old Man and the Books. It's been a tough week at the bookstore. General Manager on vacation, one supervisor in the hospital and some sort of bug causing sick days galore. Added to that, I forgot today was Saturday and I have to head off to work in 15minutes. I just remembered I have a blog to post. I have to do it now because I won't be home from work until after midnight. Yikes! What helped to relieve my stress this week? A Book Every Day.

This Crazy Book World. Saturday, August 30, 2008. Kids Say the Darndest Things. As a teacher, I have heard some wild comments from students. And, I am always amazed how perceptive kids can be. After enjoying my summer off, I had lunch with a colleague last week. She spent the summer working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Been back in school for five days – I get it! SaturdaySilliness: At least one conscientious library user
http://saturdaysilliness.blogspot.com/2008/08/at-least-one-conscientious-library-user.html
This Crazy Book World. Thursday, August 14, 2008. At least one conscientious library user. Because of the vast number of highlighted and scribbled on books that come through the library, I thought I was alone in my frustration. I began to believe that students think writing in library books is the trendy thing to do or think that their marginalia are ideas of great genius meant to be shared. Well, I was wrong. There is at least one conscientious student out there who feels my pain. I'm thinking about the...
SaturdaySilliness: My Son, The Non-Reader
http://saturdaysilliness.blogspot.com/2008/09/my-son-non-reader.html
This Crazy Book World. Saturday, September 6, 2008. My Son, The Non-Reader. I woke up this morning at about 8:00. I turned over, looked at the clock - nothing. Like every other morning, I tried CNN - nothing. Eventually, my sleepy mind realized that the power was off. Of course, this was the perfect opportunity to read - the house was quiet, my son was still asleep. Heaven! When my 15 year-old son finally woke up, he instantly noticed the lack of electricity. Stunned, he walked into my room. I had a coup...

Librarians do it in the stacks: November 2011
http://librariansdoitinthestacks.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Librarians do it in the stacks. Endeavors in marketing and promotion for academic libraries. Back in the stacks. I'm finally back after a whirlwind year. Having a baby and maternity leave left me with little time to devote to writing. I've missed posting to my blog and hope to get right back into the swing of things, starting right now! The first novel I actually finished after my son arrived (general sleeplessness made for lots of failed reading attempts), was The Art of Racing in the Rain. Speaking of ...

Librarians do it in the stacks. Endeavors in marketing and promotion for academic libraries. Zoo City - Lauren Beukes. Well, for a novel that has been awarded the 2011 Arthur C Clark Award and was shortlisted for the 2011 World Fantasy Award, I was sadly disappointed. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Librarians do it in the stacks. Endeavors in marketing and promotion for academic libraries. Song of Ice and Fire - George R R Martin. So, I'm just settling in to read Martin's Song of Ice and Fire. Series. I'm really looking forward to it. It's been on my TBR list for some time now and I'm already hooked after the first twenty pages. Lullabies for Little Criminals - Heather O'Neill. Well, for a depressing story about child prostitution and heroin use, Lullabies for Little Criminals. The Hollowing - Robe...

Librarians do it in the stacks. Endeavors in marketing and promotion for academic libraries. The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao - Junot Diaz. A curse that has caused misery to the family for generations. The novel moves smoothly back and forth between Oscar's life and those of his mother and grandfather's fuku. Immersed tragic tales, culminating in the end of Oscar's days and the lifting of the curse. Man, Mr. Diaz knows how to effectively curse (pun intended! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Brief ...

Librarians do it in the stacks. Endeavors in marketing and promotion for academic libraries. A Clash of Kings - George R R Martin. Well, I am definitely still hooked. The plot detail alone is outstanding and the characters grow with every chapter; I don't know how Martin keeps everything together, but he sure does. If you haven't already read A Song of Ice and Fire. Go out and buy it, borrow it from a library or a friend, but seriously, put it at the top of your TBR list! I can hardly spare time to eat&#...

Something Wickedly Weird - The Icy Hand. Sunday, August 31, 2008. Something Wickedly Weird - The Icy Hand. It's winter on the isolated island of Crampton Rock and there's a chill in the air that has nothing to do with the temperature. Even the talking fish is warning of imminent danger. It makes me wish my son was younger, so we could read it together. Saturday, August 30, 2008. I have been invited to post over at Saturday Silliness. Librarians do it in the stacks. Endeavors in marketing and promotion for academic libraries. I think LibraryThing is the best thing that ever happened to me. I've been listening to my friends and colleagues extoll on the virtues of LibraryThing for some time now. I always agreed and then never found the time to check it out. Well, I was definitely missing out. So much fun! Who knows why I waited so long to sign up, being the extreme book nerd that I am, but I'm sure glad I did. So I'm sitting at my desk,...

Librarians do it in the stacks: Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro
http://librariansdoitinthestacks.blogspot.com/2008/08/never-let-me-go-kazuo-ishiguro.html
Librarians do it in the stacks. Endeavors in marketing and promotion for academic libraries. Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro. At first glance, it appears the novel is about a young girl attending boarding school, experiencing the trials and tribulations of growing up. But, as Kathy continues to tell her story, the reader soon realizes not all is as it seems. Ahhh, this definitely left me deep in thought. This book is an interesting, yet disturbing, look at what our own future may hold.

This Crazy Book World. Saturday, September 20, 2008. New directions for libraries. Apparently, these days, students believe that our library is a one stop shop. Yes, they still want books and we get many questions about campus unrelated to the library, but those are all part of our everyday routine. I've had two interesting requests lately, and the students who asked fully expected us to provided them, no questions asked. Well," she says, "do you know where I can buy one? Insert valley girl accent here).
