山間部にはシダのお化け ヒカゲヘゴ や、樹木に巻きついた高さ５ｍはあるポトス、鳥と見間違えるような花 ゴクラクチョウカ 極楽鳥花 もある。 １０ｍを超すポトス 長さ７０センチ近い豆の木、バナナ パパイア マンゴー パッションフルーツなどの南国果実は、露地 温室でない自然の状態 で収穫でき、島の山間部に行けば野生のものもある。 石垣市の鳥、カンムリワシや、 琉球アカショービン という鳥が樹上で ヒュロロローン と甲高く鳴き、大きな甲殻類ヤシガニや、ヤエヤマサソリ、ノコギリガザミなど、面白い動物たちが歓迎してくれる。 オオシママドボタルなどは、９月２０日頃から翌年１月中旬までに成虫になる冬のホタルで、石垣島 西表島 小浜島 黒島にしか生息していない。
