Sewing in the City

Wednesday, November 02, 2011. This is now OOP McCalls 5764, view B. A very quick and easy project that I modified slightly by adding a lining. The cape itself is camel camelhair from fabricmart, and the lining this fantastic orange Italian china silk, also from fabricmart. I interlined the lining with some cotton flannel I had lying around for extra warmth. Sewing in the City: October 2011

http://sewinginthecity.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 18, 2011. This is the first straight vintage dress I've sewn in a long time! This pattern appears to have been a freebie obtained by mailing in a Kotex box top. Based on the advertising in with the directions, both the pattern and the advertised Kotex are available in "proportioned" sizes. Its a cute pattern, but I shudder to think what the circa 1960s feminine products were like. Also, for those of you who are very observant, yes those are TWO rings on my left hand! Sewing in the City: January 2010

Sunday, January 17, 2010. Here's a better picture of me in the coat. all bundled up for the january weather! This is a pencil skirt I made before christmas. Plain and simple, but I really liked the plaid - from the Ralph collection on fabric.com. I must have 30 of those hotpatterns pencil skirts - I. Ve really gotten my money from this one! Friday, January 08, 2010. I had a productive week of sewing between christmas and new years, but not as productive as I thought it'd be! For warmth, I interlined the ...

Sewing in the City: March 2010

http://sewinginthecity.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 20, 2010. I can't believe I'm posting this on a 72 degree, beautiful spring day - but here I am armed for winter. The photos's about a month old, and I actually made the vest over christmas break. This was during one of the snowstorms when I had to go into work (I always have to go into work! This is a more recent project, and - drumroll please - my first Burda project! My success with this project was enough to make me get another subscription to Burda after letting my last one lapse.

Sewing in the City: June 2010

http://sewinginthecity.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 13, 2010. Here are two very summery projects I completed over memorial day weekend. I traced mine so I have the original intact if/when I change sizes, but I feel sad for all the people who won't get to try the pattern! The 3/4 sleeve shirt is J Crew. I made it up without the fish eye darts in a blue linen/rayon blend. I didn't have quite enough fabric so I used a scrap of vintage printed rayon for the facings. I made the slit too low, but that was my own fault for failing to mark position.

Crafty Shark: March 2008

http://craftyshark.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 27, 2008. In case of fire . . . Last night the fire alarm went off in our building. My husband (Mr. Shark, let's call him) could smell smoke in our bedroom, so we made haste to exit the building. I thought of stuff to grab quickly before we left, and came up with the following list, in this order:. 1) Our pet cockatiel. 3) Keys, wallet, cell phone. 4) My new extra special knitting project. Shows you where my priorities are. Ps - our building did not burn down. yay! Next to our building.

I am passionate about sewing and this blog is a gallery of the garments that I have made for myself. Sunday, June 19, 2011. Ruffle Shirt Simplicity 2339. I have made version C of the simplicity shirt I made in April. This shirt was principally made to match the skirt fabric and was completed two weeks ago. Last weekend I made the skirt in the photo. The fabric was given to me by a friend. Sadly I will not complete the skirt as I really dislike the way it drapes. I attached the cuff to the sleave as per i...

I am so glad I started at the end of March because it was time consuming. This was mainly because I adapted the pattern and secondly because of the hand sewing required. I am passionate about sewing and this blog is a gallery of the garments that I have made for myself. Sunday, September 11, 2011. Summer skirt and blouse - Simplicity 2599. Wow, I have not posted for over a month. The coat has been a labour of love with a considerable amount of hand sewing. I am nearly finished but have run out of ribbon and there is none to be found at my local sewing shops. So as it may be another two weeks I thought I would post on something I made last summer. Loose fitting, unlined jacket has dropped shoulders, neck and front bands, welt pockets, pleated lower section, raised waistline with waistband wide sticked hems, above knee length and snap closing. Sewing in Surf City

Sewing in Surf City. Wednesday, July 29, 2015. July is "dresses" month for the Stashbusting Challenge. I made a matching top and skirt my July Burda Challenge. If I wear them together, an innocent observer might think they were a dress. But I wanted to sew something that was really on theme, so here is the real deal. This is the wave dress from the May, 2012 issue of Burdastyle (dress #107c). My version, in blues. Burda's version, more luminous than mine. I liked this pattern when it first came out but I...

Craft, life and everything in between. So after yesterdays post that actual sewing must wait until after my dissertation is written – I have completely ignored that and instead spent yesterday evening trying to salvage Simplicity 1998. This is a dress I made to my size however it is more like a sack – a problem other sewists have found with this pattern, see reviews here. Which I’m going to try. A sense of purpose. So having wanted to start a blog about lots of different things – I have decided tha...
