Shropshire Birder: Scilly Pelagic no 2
http://shropshirebirder.blogspot.com/2015/08/scilly-pelagic-no-2.html
Friday, 7 August 2015. Scilly Pelagic no 2. My second evening pelagic from St Marys (setting off at 5.00pm) and it was mostly about the familiar 'ever present' seabirds of the area. Starting off with a good few Manx Shearwater. Only minutes in, near St Agnes! A fly-by Arctic Skua. And cracking views of Bonxies. Taking on the gulls in the wake of the boat! And even when the light levels fell, an amazing surprise in store with this amazing sunset over Bishop Rock! But we're here for the birds. Scilly pelag...

Shropshire Birder: Scilly pelagic no 4 - Great Shearwater
http://shropshirebirder.blogspot.com/2015/08/scilly-pelagic-no-4-great-shearwater.html
Sunday, 9 August 2015. Scilly pelagic no 4 - Great Shearwater. A mizzle /drizzle start to the morning but it eventually cleared up and three Great Shearwaters put in appearance, the first two coming within range. Here's the first one. Don't you just hate wave creasts! The second bird came within frame filling distance! See what I mean! Just when I thought it couldn't get better than this, tomorrow was about to prove me wrong! Another 1st summer Long-tailed Skua. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Scilly...

Dragonflies and Damselflies of Shropshire. Dragonflies and Damselflies of Shropshire (The Hobby Good Food guide.). The more common breeding species are likely to be seen almost anywhere in the County (usually but not always near water) during the Summer months, others occupy quite specialised habitats and a well timed visit to a specific location may be necessary to see them. Luckily there are two first class field guides available: A fieldguide to the Dragonflies and Damselflies of Great Britain by Stev...

Shropshire Birder: Scilly pelagic no 5 - The late Great Shear Show!
http://shropshirebirder.blogspot.com/2015/08/scilly-pelagic-no-5-late-great-shear.html
Monday, 10 August 2015. Scilly pelagic no 5 - The late Great Shear Show! Another great evening on Sapphire, predictably unpredictable and whilst we remained Wilson's-less, there was plenty of excitement in store as the evening wore on and scent of chum brought the tubenoses in! The first brief encounter was with a Sooty Shearwate. And the first of the usual glut of Stormies. Then almost immediately, the star performer of the evening was Great Shearwate. R, in all at least five were seen! Details of my ot...

Shropshire Birder: September 2014
http://shropshirebirder.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 23 September 2014. Kilnsea - Masked Shrike etc. I'd spent a long weekend in Scotland on plant duty noting the frenzied activity at Kilnsea with the discovery of a juv Masked Shrike! My first opportunity came on the Tuesday and with the crowds having died down, there were even parking spaces in the beach car park! Then down to business from the viewing point. The Masked Shrike. As ever, undaunted by distance, all the converters went on to try an eke something out of the day? Venus Pool - Peregrine.

Shropshire Birder: October 2014
http://shropshirebirder.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Friday, 31 October 2014. Davidstow - American Golden Plover. This was my third attempt to nail this 'obliging' bird! It had flown out the day of the Yellow-billed Cuckoo dip on the way back from Scilly and when I called yesterday, the airfield was shrouded in FOG! So hear we go, short on words and most angles of this rather tame juvenile American Golden Plover (284) covered. Flight AGP 284 was well and truly grounded! And everyone stayed in their cars thank goodness :-). Yes, a decent sized one at last!

To Chatterley Whitfield where a very obliging 1st summer male Red-footed Falcon. Was playing to the crowds on a daily basis and showing supremely well! A long drive on the Saturday of my return finished with a minor detour and it was no surprise to find it showing well on arrival! Here's the usual haunt! Every now and then flying in search of prey.

Shropshire Birder: Scilly pelagic no 4 - Stormies
http://shropshirebirder.blogspot.com/2015/08/scilly-pelagic-no-4-stormies.html
Sunday, 9 August 2015. Scilly pelagic no 4 - Stormies. We were all hoping for a Wilson's today and just in case the opportunity arose, an estimated 200 European Storm Petrels. Were making sure that practice could make perfect? I just love watching and trying to photograph these amazing birds but. they are a nightmare! The trickiest subject by far from a boat. Here's two together in the mizzle. Shooting with the light, they were always facing upwind when paddling for food on the surface! This is not a spe...
