How we make stuff. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation. What does Disposable mean? Think of all the things you use every day and then throw away. These are disposable. Isn’t it puzzling that we make many things designed to be thrown away with materials that last forever? We extract metals and fossil fuels from the ground and harvest plants. We make products designed to be thrown away once used. We buy products such as disposable cutlery, water bottles, plates and drink cans because they are convenient.

How we make stuff. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Where do burgers come from? When you eat a burger, do you ever wonder where all the different ingredients have come from? They might well have started off on the other side of the world, travelling thousands of kilometres by plane, train and lorry to reach your plate. The flour to make the bun might have come from wheat grown in vast fields in Canada. The beef may well have come from a cow that grazed on Irish pastures. Can we do things differently.

How we make stuff. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation. What are rubber ducks made from? Oddly enough, not rubber! The first rubber ducks were made from the sticky sap of rubber trees, but in the 20th century, we started using an incredible substance that doesn’t exist in nature: plastic. Not only is it cheap, plastic is also strong, light, durable and unsinkable! Like the petrol in your car, most plastics are made from crude oil. We can create lots of different kinds of plastic. Can we do things differently.

How we make stuff. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation. What links gorillas and mobile phones. The answer is tantalum: a precious metal used to make mobile phones, which is mined in the forests of central Africa, where gorillas live. Mobile phones are also made from copper, tin, gold and lots of other materials that we extract from the earth. To make mobile phones, we mine raw materials from the ground. These are transformed into different parts and assembled into phones. Can we do things differently.

How we make stuff. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation. How do we turn trees into paper? Paper is all around us in many forms, from tissues to books and magazines, but how is it made? The recipe is quite simple. You need fibres from plants, chemicals, energy and lots of water. Billions of trees are cut down worldwide every year to make paper. The trees are cut into logs and transported to the paper mill. The logs are turned into a mushy pulp and dried into paper. More and more paper is recovered to be recycled.
