Smoky Hills and Big Trees Railroad. Fun in 1/87 Scale. I've decided on an around-the-wall style, although, of course without a fourth wall, it's more like around-the-area. The actual shape has not been determined (as I have no track plan yet), but I suspect it will be an E or G-shape, with one or more "blobs" to allow continuous running of through freights, etc. When I get CAD files from him, I will post it here. Smoky Hills and Big Trees Railroad. Fun in 1/87 Scale. I'm currently limited to an area in my shop that is approximately 24 feet by 8 feet, although the 8 feet can be extended to almost 14 feet in most of the length. I intend to use this additional territory to make a more interesting layout. Photos 2 through 5 show the area now with the old insulation removed with foam insulation installed and sheet-rocked. Still need to mud and tape the seams. Here’s a diagram of the space available:.

Smoky Hills and Big Trees Railroad. Fun in 1/87 Scale. My last layout was built using L-girder with plywood sub-roadbed. HO scale cork was then glued to the top of the plywood and finally the track was nailed to the cork using Atlas 1/2" track nails. It was controlled by a Digitrax Chief DCC system using a DT400 throttle. All turnouts were controlled by Tortoise switch machines thrown using toggle switches.
