Open 9am until dusk daily. History Of The Sailor's Reading Room. The Sailors' Reading Room was built in memory of a Sea Captain, Charles Rayley RN. He had been in the Royal Navy as a young man. He was out in the West Indies where he fought against privateers. He got a sabre cut across his cheek and for this he was given a gratuity of 80 by some particular magazine at the time, which was a lot of money then. The North East Wind. Open 9am until dusk daily. Saturday 28th November 2015. 8211; Christmas Lights Switch-on, ghost stories by candlelight in the Reading Room after the light have been switched on. There will be two sessions; the first for adults and children 6.30-8.00pm, and the second from 8.30-10.00pm for some serious spooking. The original Billards table donated to The Sailor’s Reading Room in 1901 and has recently had over 1000 spent on it by Thurstons, the leading snooker specialists, who have upgraded the cushions and enlarged the pockets to bring it up to full Snooker specifications.
