A blog of my attempt to get my fitness back and complete something slightly bonkers: "the toughest footrace on Earth", the Marathon des Sables . . . Saturday, 14 April 2012. 14 April 2012 Stage 6 - MERDANI/MERZOUGA: 15,5km. The final stage: a short distance of 15.5km but with a sting in the tail. It's Dunes Day for the last day: cruel. 9km (just over 5.5 miles) of tough sand dunes (the Chebbi Erg dunes, the highest in Morocco) with the last one a couple of hundred metres from the finish. From where I've ...

A blog of my attempt to get my fitness back and complete something slightly bonkers: "the toughest footrace on Earth", the Marathon des Sables . . . Thursday, 31 December 2009. The first six months . . . I'm in no way medically qualified but researching the training needed to complete the MdS suggests that carrying fat on the body through the desert isn't a great idea. Try as I might I haven't been able to run more than 10 miles in a week. My total mileage since June 2009, when I joined the MdS Wait-...

That will require consecutive day training as well as some big mileages. For similar i...

A blog of my attempt to get my fitness back and complete something slightly bonkers: "the toughest footrace on Earth", the Marathon des Sables . . . Thursday, 23 December 2010. I have an 'opathy! I came across an ultra-running website that recommended a visit to Dr. Martyn Speight. Fortunately Dr. Speight has a particular interest and expertise in this field, being one of those chaps who runs up and down 1-in-25 fells for fun at the weekend. X-ray scans show a clear degeneration in the tendon areas that ...

A blog of my attempt to get my fitness back and complete something slightly bonkers: "the toughest footrace on Earth", the Marathon des Sables . . . Sunday, 28 February 2010. Changing my footstrike . . . again! I've developed to being able to run small distances (a couple of miles) barefoot on a treadmill, which actually feels quite comfortable on the feet themselves. More research on changing footstrike suggests midfoot running may be better, and certainly better than heel-striking. A 150-mile footrace ...
