Rose Hybridizing

A path to new roses. Monday, July 6, 2015. While on a recent trip I came across a most beautiful and floriferous rose. It was labeled as the species rose, Rosa arvensis. A fellow rose breeder from France, Pascal Heitzler, who had used Rosa arvensis. Extensively, was able to definitively say that the rose was mislabeled, and was definitely not R. arvensis. Unfortunately, he was not able to identify this amazing rose. The last photo was taken to demonstrate how small the flower buds were. The next seedling...

Rose Hybridizing: March 2015

http://sproulroses.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

A path to new roses. Monday, March 30, 2015. You just never know which seedlings are going to survive…. I have already culled several hundred seedlings, but among the new seedlings that are blooming for the first time, I am finding what appear to be other "keepers". Only time will tell whether any of these survive future cullings, or demise from natural causes…. Thursday, March 19, 2015. The new seedlings that were just moved out of the greenhouse are always the most susceptible (see photo below). Wow, t...

Rose Hybridizing: More Random 2015 Seedlings

http://sproulroses.blogspot.com/2015/06/random-2015-seedlings.html

A path to new roses. Wednesday, June 24, 2015. More Random 2015 Seedlings. A handful of seedlings are starting to show themselves as being different from most of the other seedlings. These 3 will be among the 2015 survivors. The first seen below is a seedling coming from a cross of 'Singin' in the Rain' X [('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X 'Julia Child']. It has good color and nice fragrance. July 3, 2015 at 8:01 PM. When I saw the last one, the first thing that popped into my mind was whirligig. Hi Ja...

Rose Hybridizing: First Pollination of 2015

http://sproulroses.blogspot.com/2015/03/first-pollination-of-2015.html

A path to new roses. Sunday, March 8, 2015. First Pollination of 2015. Last week I moved some of my new rose seed parents into the greenhouse. Having some seed parents in the greenhouse helps me to get an earlier start on pollinations. Like todays cross, most years the first cross is one of happenstance - I'll use whatever happens to be blooming early. March 9, 2015 at 9:52 PM. March 10, 2015 at 7:11 PM. Hi Dave, sounds like a good cross for you - I hope that you get some nice stripes! A path to new roses.

Rose Hybridizing: More New Seedlings

http://sproulroses.blogspot.com/2015/05/more-new-seedlings.html

A path to new roses. Sunday, May 17, 2015. There are lots of new seedlings. Here are a few more pics! Believe it or not, the last photo above is from a cross of 2 of my favorite Hulthemias. I suspect that the blotch is hidden under the white eye. I will have to try crossing this one with a normal rose to see if the blotch can be recovered…. May 18, 2015 at 6:40 PM. No, wait wait! You are missing out on a big opportunity- - reverse blotches! May 19, 2015 at 9:51 PM. May 18, 2015 at 7:31 PM.

Rose Hybridizing: Random 2015 Seedlings

http://sproulroses.blogspot.com/2015/05/random-2015-seedlings.html

A path to new roses. Monday, May 4, 2015. There are so many Hulthemias this year that I have had to culled a larger number that just a few years ago I would have kept. Here are some views of random seedlings that I am watching. Finally, the last seedling featured in this post is not a Hulthemia. This is a shrub type rose that is fragrant and floriferous. Can it be that this will be the rose that I name in honor of my mom? We'll have to wait to see how it does outside. May 4, 2015 at 11:23 PM. Awww I love...

ROSES IN WATERCOLOUR Beatrice Cloake: ONCE UPON A SUMMER

http://roseswatercolour.blogspot.com/2015/02/once-upon-summer.html

I have one passion : Roses. They grow in my garden. I love painting them in watercolour. Wednesday, 18 February 2015. ONCE UPON A SUMMER. Once Upon a Summer". On paper Saunders Waterford. This painting was a joy to paint. I had bought this beautiful little handmade pottery vase in Canterbury near the Cathedral. It was the perfect blue pot to display my yellow roses. I decided to break the yellow with some cosmos pink flowers. Of course the hollyhocks from my garden too became a very welcome addition.

http://aprillesgarden.blogspot.com/2017/01/winter-vegetables.html

Aprille's SoCal Gardening ✿❀✾. Tuesday, January 10, 2017. I was pruning roses at a job in drizzle today when I noticed their sad tomato vegetable beds with nothing in them! If you're in SoCal, know that this is a great time to grow winter vegetables! What you say, you can grow veggies in winter? I have trouble with the brassica family though as they tend to get aphids. But I am a big salad girl. So I love to grow lettuce! I love not having to buy lettuce for about 3-4 months! January 11, 2017 at 6:39 AM.

http://aprillesgarden.blogspot.com/2016_07_01_archive.html

Aprille's SoCal Gardening ✿❀✾. Sunday, July 31, 2016. This is my first time growing any Amarath. I sowed the seeds back in March. Remember those pretty pink seedlings I posted? Those cute little things are now 6' tall! I knew they were going to grow big but not taller than me(5' 9")! So I just went back and looked at the seed packet. It says Amaranthus hypochondriacus. What a funny name. And the height listed is 5-8'! The packet also says you can cook the seeds like rice or pop like popcorn! I began seei...

Aprille's SoCal Gardening ✿❀✾. Monday, October 10, 2016. I've had this weird little vine for maybe 15 years in several different pots. I love the little olive green leaves and the reddish stems. Sometimes it's sold with houseplants in garden centers. I cannot imagine being able to grow it indoors! Mine is such a little monster that you can't even see the pot! Aprille's SoCal Gardening ✿❀✾. Friday, September 16, 2016. Now is the time to plant Sweet Peas from seed! I planted mine around the first of this month and already have sprouts. Yay! I soaked them overnight in water before I planted. I am so excited about them this year. Or should I say next year. They are the only annual that takes SO LONG from sprout to flower. It takes like 6 or 7 months for flowers to come! Marigolds take like 4 weeks! Tomatoes take about 8 weeks! They should be excellent! I think th...
