Stanford in Paraguay

Thursday, March 31, 2011. Day 8: Iguazu Falls. The most obvious difference between Paraguay and Argentina was the rainforest. Southeastern Paraguay is the soy belt, and is an agricultural monoculture. But we had not been in Argentina for many kilometers before these fields gave way to bonafied rain forests (which seemed particularly appropriate as it was actively raining [2]. Then, we got on a little train and a long boardwalk to the western falls. A few pictures of the team. A couple downtown pictures.

Stanford in Paraguay: Day 6

http://stanfordinparaguay.blogspot.com/2011/03/day-6_28.html

Monday, March 28, 2011. Note: The next 4-5 posts (not counting this one) will follow our weekend adventures and will likely be the most interesting. We stopped by this seemingly unremarkable pub:. But it overlooks the Lopez Palace, the centerpiece of downtown:. I find that in these situations, I try my best not to be an impediment to conversation by trying to remain engaged and pick up as many words as possible, even though the conversation eludes me. Giving me the excuse I needed to give up. I dropp...

Stanford in Paraguay: Day 7b Of Jesuits and Nazis

http://stanfordinparaguay.blogspot.com/2011/03/day-7b-of-jesuits-and-nazis.html

Tuesday, March 29, 2011. Day 7b Of Jesuits and Nazis. This tour was decidedly pro-Jesuit. The guide argued that the Jesuit’s main goal was to protect the indigenous people from being enslaved by the Europeans. This is why the Spanish kicked them out , because they were impeding with the colonial hegemony. March 31, 2011 at 9:11 AM. Once again, struedel trumps history. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Stanford in Paraguay: A Brief Butterfly Interlude

http://stanfordinparaguay.blogspot.com/2011/03/brief-butterfly-interlude.html

Tuesday, March 29, 2011. A Brief Butterfly Interlude. This one looked like a leaf and traveled around on Guillermo's hat for several minutes. It was very cool, though I can't say much for its taste in hats. And I saw this enormous moth at my hotel, but it kind of fit the Lepidopteran theme. March 31, 2011 at 9:13 AM. What amazing biodiversity, and it never fails to surprise me to see some local species , or cousins thereof, in foreign climes. March 31, 2011 at 3:46 PM. Biogeography is so sublimely (sp?

A Fiercer Delight and a Fiercer Discontent. Eclectic reflections on music, philosophy, theology and culture. Sunday, December 20, 2009. I have created this post as a kind of gateway site. The idea here is to keep a topical table of contents to my favorite posts. Experiments in Graphical Philosophy. These tend to be my most popular and most original posts). Stanford in Camboida: Interlude 2: Some Thoughts on Why we Find Wonder Here

http://stanfordincambodia.blogspot.com/2012/09/interlude-2-some-thoughts-on-why-we.html

Interlude 2: Some Thoughts on Why we Find Wonder Here. The Angkor Archeological Park doesn’t primarily market history, or even culture. People don’t primarily come here to brush up on their 12. Century Khumer timeline or to track the story of innovation in sand stone architecture or even (for the most part) to investigate the 8 fold path. What is it about carved piles of rocks that is not only a source of wonder but an iconic source of wonder? I came up with at least 4 answers. Wonder of Human Capacity.

Day 1 AM: Exploring the River Front. When we teach a class we usually try to set up the computer lab on Sunday. But the students are using their personal computers this week, which caused all kinds of technical difficulties during the week, but left us with a day to explore and get over jet lag. 1] Much more on this later as I visited the actual site of this civilization over the weekend. Day 1 PM: Hanging Out with Andy. He is in Cambodia working with an organization that helps exploited children (using ...
