We have these pictures of John on his first birthday, clutching a basketball like it’s the most important thing in the world. It’s almost the same size that he is. Yesterday, John finally, FINALLY got in the game. His very first team — coached by his dad — had their very first match up against the fairly intimidating Vergennes Thundercats. They won! I started it four years ago last month, which is hard to believe. I was still in my thirties and John was only four. I had no idea what the next few years would bring. Both good and bad. When I was first diagnosed, I mentally congratulated myself on living somewhere that this was not going to be a problem. Summer in Vermont can be hot, but it doesn’t last long.
