Friends of St.Jeanne Antide. Lay Friends of the Missions. In 1868, the Civil Authorities felt the need to invite nuns to take over the running of the Orphanage in Lower Merchants Street, Valletta, which housed poor girls but was badly run. To this appeal five Italian nuns of the Sisters of Charity, then known as Sisters Of Charity Under The Protection Of St Vincent De Paule, arrived in Malta on the 1st December 1868 to man the orphanage.
