Friday, July 31, 2015. Superhero Training: Elementary School Kids. I broke my superhero trainings into two groups: the preschoolers and the school-aged crowd. I wrote about my preschool one here. These are the modifications I made for the older group. Things I kept the same:. Things I did differently:. 1 - Superhero Names. 2 - Create a Sidekick. Out came my trusty Slick Stix for the superhero shields. I had ended up with lots of colored plates that failed to be masks for our Act Out! Do you have the cour...

Sunday, March 29, 2015. Fashion Forward: A tween fashion design program. I used to be a huge fan of Project Runway (haven't seen the latest seasons cause we don't have cable anymore which makes me sad and, while I'm on the subject, Tim Gunn is a master and a gentleman. but I digress), so I thought I would use some of that enthusiasm to create a teen/tween program. Threaded needles in their holster. I spend my time during the program helping with ideas and giving suggestions as needed. And threading n...

Friday, January 30, 2015. Flannel Friday: Bear's Picture. This flannel story is loosely based on Frank Asch's Bread and Honey. But I have changed it a little bit to make it a more dramatic flannelboard. (See notes at the end). One day at school, Bear painted a picture of his mother. He gave her a nice round bear face, a short bear neck, two little bear eyes, some friendly bear eyes, a little bear nose, and a sweet bear smile. (I put on the pieces as I say each piece). Owl thinks the eyes are too small.

Tuesday, August 4, 2015. This summer I tried something new for me: three day camps. These sorts of things have never worked for me before because I could never count on the kids coming back day after day, but at this particular library, I've been seeing a good repeat rate so I thought I would give it a try. The benefit to the camp is that while I'm usually stuck with craft projects that can be finished in an hour, with a camp I could expand the possibilities to include more complex projects. Drying. ...

Friday, May 22, 2015. Flannel Friday: The Goat in the Turnips. I made this flannel some time ago and I can't remember where I got the original story. If anyone knows, please tell me! Once there was a little boy who was taking care of a goat. The naughty goat gets into the turnip patch and won't come out. A dog comes to help, but he can't get the goat out either. Neither can the fox. Not even the big bear can manage it! Which goes to show you: sometimes it's the smallest one who can do the biggest thing.
Library Lalaland: April 2015

Friday, April 24, 2015. Every once in a while, I like to shake up my storytime crowd and do something different. This time, it was the preschool/toddler obstacle course. I got the idea from The Show Me Librarian. Originally, and then I looked up some more ideas, considered what I had in stock, and set up my course. In the end, I ended up spending $7 on seven hula hoops and that was it. Program. I simply made them in to cubes and stacked them up to build a castle. The Big Tunnel. Not pretty, but fun.

Wednesday, December 10, 2014. A favorite holiday-ish program at my library is the annual Gingerbread House. You'll need a metric ton (exact measurement! Metric ton of candy. That made lovely fences and windows. I do two sessions of the program back to back and sign up 45 kids for each. With no-shows this year, I ended up with 79 total kids plus parents. Before the day of the program, I cut out lots of small cardboard squares and covered them with tin foil to make the bases. And put that one in bowls with...

Wednesday, November 12, 2014. I wish I didn't have such awful dreams. A new girl moved in down the street. She was terribly introverted, and openly despised all out-going personalities she had to interact with. No one was sure what she did for work, save that it made her horribly upset every day. The girl hated other introverts even more than the extroverts, but above all else, she hated herself for hating other introverts. She should be supportive, she supposed, and so loathed herself for her failing.
