Monday, October 7, 2013. We went with friends to the Scallop festival in Whitianga; a charming seaside town in the Coromandal District. Had a great time.5000 people, lots of wine, scallops of course and all manner of yummy sea food. There were a number of bands, both jazz and rock. They ran a competition for the best 'Scallop ode' although I missed entering, I gave it a go and got printed in the local rag. The Mammoth Mollusc. By John Glasse. the flying kiwis: March 2013

http://www.theflyingkiwis.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 27, 2013. Home owners liberated from financial death grip. Most people have come to realise that the word ‘mortgage’ literally means ‘death grip’. What a lot of folk do not know is that a home mortgage scheme, instigated and introduced back in 1989 has set over 270 NZ home owners free from this financial strangle hold. Most of us spend our working lives, and beyond, paying off a bank mortgage and when we finally get free we watch our children commence the same cycle. Back in those early ...

the flying kiwis: September 2011

http://www.theflyingkiwis.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 15, 2011. It was only a matter of time before someone suggested introducing a Capital Gains Tax. The NZ Labour Party are preparing to hit us with just such a scheme if they win the November election. Where else was there to go? On the other hand, in order to glean more votes, the same people have decided to ease the tax burden by not charging a Goods and services tax (GST) (or VAT in the U.K) on vegetables. This has to be wonderful news for vegetarians and vegans. Diamonds would be a ...

the flying kiwis: October 2011

Thursday, October 20, 2011. A leg of NZ lamb (very small, enough for one meal and a bit of cold) now costs $50. This is outrageous. when we farmed in the mid eighties we were lucky to get $25 for the whole animal (on the hoof). Thankfully a generous local farmer (we farm sit for him and his wife when they holiday) has offered us a hogget (year old lamb) I helped with the butchering and we ended up with 25kilos for $80. Brilliant! And enough meat to share with our family. Saturday, October 15, 2011. What ...

Saturday, March 10, 2012. Why the ‘corporate’ World? Stay with me on this one. The hedgehog syndrome is hitting office workers, under managers, labourers in fact anyone who has been unfortunate enough to experience stress through the mean minded, unfeeling and totally unreasonable attitude of a boss who is quite simply a CORPORATE BULLY. The Company owner, my new boss insisted that I do not mix with these agents, he considered them to be beneath management. I understood the reason for his insistence ...

Magnon's Meanderings: June 2015

http://magnonsmeanderings.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

A diverse offering twixt the interesting, the unusual, and the amusing. Tuesday, 30 June 2015. I'm always a tiny bit anxious when I await the results of my three-monthly blood test, but I really shouldn't be. The important bit seems to be the middle one; the HBA1C section. I believe this is the bit that shows how much sugar (glucose) is in your blood (please correct me if I'm wrong), and mine shows 6.2% (as it has since March 2014). Monday, 29 June 2015. Started poking long metal poles into a huge lorry ...

A diverse offering twixt the interesting, the unusual, and the amusing. Monday, 31 August 2015. Sunday, 30 August 2015. 20 things that I really, really, don't like (in no particular order). 3: Lack of punctuality. 6: The colour orange. 10: Paintings of wide-eyed children. 11: Cars (or any machines) that don't work. 12: Arrogant, insolent, neighbours. 13: Very strong wind. 14: Experts who aren't. 19: The green bits (angelica) in mixed preserved fruit. Magnon's Meanderings: It's all right for some!

http://magnonsmeanderings.blogspot.com/2015/07/its-all-right-for-some.html

A diverse offering twixt the interesting, the unusual, and the amusing. Friday, 17 July 2015. It's all right for some! Travelling half way around the world, by boat, plane, train, and car, is tiring; especially for a one-year-old. Bunny has now recovered, and is back to his quiet contented self (mostly). Here he is enjoying a short 'power nap' in the excessive heat of yesterday afternoon. Sleeping like the proverbial baby! And up at the barn they now have electricity.Yippee. 17 July 2015 at 05:58. The We...

Magnon's Meanderings: Depressed again.

http://magnonsmeanderings.blogspot.com/2015/07/depressed-again.html

A diverse offering twixt the interesting, the unusual, and the amusing. Monday, 13 July 2015. I'm just a fucking painter. I've never earned much money; in fact I've had more bloody work stolen from me than I've ever sold. I live a simple life. Through bloody hard work I've managed to create a pleasant home from what was originally a tumble down one room ruin. I grow most of what I eat, and have just about buggered my back in the cultivation process. But, where has all this got me! So, another week begins...

Magnon's Meanderings: End of an Era.

http://magnonsmeanderings.blogspot.com/2015/07/end-of-era.html

A diverse offering twixt the interesting, the unusual, and the amusing. Thursday, 16 July 2015. End of an Era. I never thought I'd see the day when Land Rover would decide to scrap production of their 'Defender' model; but they have. There is no question that were uncomfortable dinosaurs, but they were much loved by farmers, the military, African safari-goers, and even HM The Queen. So, what will replace the much loved Defender? 16 July 2015 at 07:30. 16 July 2015 at 07:48. 16 July 2015 at 08:30. If this...

Magnon's Meanderings: Windows 10.

http://magnonsmeanderings.blogspot.com/2015/08/windows-10.html

A diverse offering twixt the interesting, the unusual, and the amusing. Wednesday, 5 August 2015. Why am I always tempted by updates? On the well loved principle of 'if it ain't broke, etc' these things are probably best avoided. Windows 10 opens up with 'inspirational' photos of jellyfish, mountains, seascapes, etc, which is quite pleasant. So I'm quite happy with it; but then I was perfectly happy with Windows 8. Have you made the leap? If so, how do you find it? 5 August 2015 at 07:17. I havent made t...

Magnon's Meanderings: Another Milestone.

http://magnonsmeanderings.blogspot.com/2015/07/another-milestone.html

A diverse offering twixt the interesting, the unusual, and the amusing. Tuesday, 14 July 2015. The downstairs bathroom, at the barn, is now finished and is serviceable; although we'll probably change the hand basin tap; it's not right, is it. The hole above the window is for an extractor fan, which has since been installed. The bog flushes, there is hot (solar heated) water in the taps, and the lovely big shower-head has fulfilled all its promises. I'm still bloody plastering. Will it ever end! It is so ...

Magnon's Meanderings: More boot-sale stuff.

http://magnonsmeanderings.blogspot.com/2015/08/more-boot-sale-stuff.html

A diverse offering twixt the interesting, the unusual, and the amusing. Monday, 3 August 2015. Don't ask me why, but I've always wanted one of these gigot holding devices (with the bone handle), it always seems a very sophisticated accessory for a roasted leg of Lamb. I shall buy a gigot, specially, when I next go to my butcher. Otherwise, I bought a heavy silver plated soup ladle, and a nice big preserving pan for sterilising my jars of vegs and paté. Not a bad morning's work. 3 August 2015 at 09:22.

Magnon's Meanderings: Hidden splendours.

http://magnonsmeanderings.blogspot.com/2015/08/hidden-splendours.html

A diverse offering twixt the interesting, the unusual, and the amusing. Sunday, 9 August 2015. I spent four years 'literally' living in the shadow of this glorious building. I was obliged to visit it every day, as well as visiting on countless other occasions simply for the pure pleasure. Looking at this picture (which I was sent recently), I now realise that there are so many bits of it that I failed to visit; most noticeably the west tower (on the left). 9 August 2015 at 06:08. 9 August 2015 at 06:47.

Magnon's Meanderings: Rain,et al.

http://magnonsmeanderings.blogspot.com/2015/08/rainet-al.html

A diverse offering twixt the interesting, the unusual, and the amusing. Monday, 10 August 2015. We're never really satisfied, are we! When it's sweltering hot, we dream of rain, then when it rains we moan about it. In 10 days time we might have some Cèpes (mushrooms), August Cèpes are reputed to be the best. I still have some preserves from last year, so we are not yet being deprived. I do like rain, but it has to be proper rain. real lumps of water that clatter onto the Velux windows at night; lovel...

Its not supposed to make sense). Mar 28th, 2008 at 9:28 PM. It's been so long. After that long and arduous password-guessing stint, I feel like I should make this place e-clean and hospitable. *dusts, cleans. and throws dirty clothes in pile on floor for good measure*. Wow, last entry 2006? Sep 5th, 2006. Classes officially started today - and since the labs don't open until next week, I had only one class on the schedule. After the class, we talked some more and went downtown together. Me: NEHS and UHS?
