The Baltic Dry Index, which measures the change in transportation cost of raw materials like metals, foodgrains and fertilisers by sea, has doubled to over 1,100 in the last few months, from an all-time low of 509 recorded in February due to capacity shortage as the shipping industry was scrapping ageing vessels, sources said.
