A Design for Life: KonMari Inspired Lifestyle Design – Clothes Part 2. January 2, 2017. When I had worked my way through the entire pile of clothes and had amassed another impressive discard pile, it was time to turn to storage. At this point, Kondo urges you to think back to your vision of your ideal lifestyle. She postulates that this vision is likely to be much more spacious than the current reality of your living situation. And what’s the easiest way to create space? Don’t throw away things that brin...

Decluttering Clothes the KonMari Way. August 23, 2015. August 26, 2015. I’ve always been a big believer in adhering to instructions. When I was young, no computer game could be fired up without first fully familiarising myself with the potential enemies and pitfalls detailed in the manual. This love of instructions has continued into adulthood and I can often be heard plaintively calling, Wait, wait, let’s read the instructions first! They also suggest you could throw a Packing Party. Although both viabl...

KonMari Inspired Wardrobe Revamp: Brought to you in glorious technicolour. June 26, 2016. August 25, 2016. Early on in my journey into minimalism I became aware of one particular facet of the movement – that of clothing and its surrounding ideologies. And is it any wonder minimalists are concerned with the question of clothes? Youtubers speak to the youth of their clothing hauls – surely the bulimic binges of a society struggling with disordered consumption. And what are we left with? As I continued my j...

Learning to Fold: Storing Clothes the Konmari Way | thelondonminimalist

Learning to Fold: Storing Clothes the Konmari Way. September 27, 2015. 8221; or “Oh, I forgot I had this! 8221; What’s been missing this whole time, Kondo says, is the secret art of folding. I found that once the clothes were preliminarily placed in an order that adhered to these “energising” rules, it was easy to see if items should be switched around to achieve the desired effect. The goal is to fold items adhering to the technique and then make little adjustments to the placement of the folds, dependi...

KonMari Inspired Wardrobe Revamp: The Je Ne Sais Quoi of Style. August 25, 2016. August 25, 2016. Having just about got my eye in with the colours, it was time for the next stage of my quest to discover some sort of style and fashion know-how. I’d been so impressed with the colour consultation from House of Colour. I had been keen to go shopping straight after getting my colours done. Decluttering my wardrobes with the KonMari method. Should I be going for girlier shoes, I have often pondered. My mor...

Discarding Clothes | thelondonminimalist

https://thelondonminimalist.com/2015/10/11/discarding-clothes

October 11, 2015. October 11, 2015. Maybe you could become a cleaning cloth! My attempts at optimism rang hollow. I sheepishly looked away, feeling somewhat guilty that I had not provided them with the bacchanalian lifestyle to which they aspired. Giving them a weak, consolatory smile I packed them into their Dignitas transport of a Marks and Spencer’s carrier bag. Did my uni top fall into this category? Too zeitgeist – representing as it does that all too brief period of wide eyed 18-year-old enth...

More yarn than skills…. Smart Bitches Last Minute Neck Warmer (or: melting in July….). July 5, 2015. Rome is hot this week, even for Rome. Warm in the morning, stifling mid-afternoon, and even the locals are complaining. The flat stays at 29-31C, which is fine if you are immobile with a fan blowing on you, but with no cool evening breeze to lighten the air, life is slow. Grey Garbaklut washcloth – strikkelysten

https://strikkelysten.wordpress.com/2015/06/21/grey-garbaklut-washcloth

More yarn than skills…. June 21, 2015. June 21, 2015. Rome is warm, and after knitting for ages on a Lacy Baktus scarf (fun, but slow going for me), I took a break and knitted up a quick washcloth as a housewarming gift for a friend. I knew she has a blue kitchen, so a grey and blue set it was. The scarf is done, but is a bit wonky and will need blocking – maybe next weekend? Project 13 (2015): Grey knitted washcloth for Alice. Pattern: See below, Garbaklut. Yarn purchased: online in Italy. Repeat until ...

More yarn than skills…. September 13, 2015. September 13, 2015. We just had a rainstorm, a welcome change. People are back from holidays, schools are starting, and cooking and knitting are both more enjoyable. I have various projects in my knitting basket, but sometimes I just feel like knitting something easy, like these Garbaklut washcloths. Good for holiday knitting where you need to be sociable (and drink wine) and chat without much stitch counting. Project 19 (2015): Magenta Garbaklut washcloths.

Lacy Baktus #1 in turquoise, black and purple – strikkelysten

https://strikkelysten.wordpress.com/2015/07/12/lacy-baktus-1-in-turquoise-black-and-purple

More yarn than skills…. Lacy Baktus #1 in turquoise, black and purple. July 12, 2015. July 12, 2015. I had heard about Baktus scarves, but never actually tried knitting one. They are great — flexible for the amount of yarn you have, for various yarn types, and they are so simple to knit! That does not mean I did not miscount a few times, which meant some wonky edges, but that is much improved after a wash. Definitely will be knitting more of these! Pattern: Lacy Baktus by Terhi. Final weight: 103 grammes.

In Drops Delight (75% wool, 25% polyamid, needles 2.5 mm). 4 Blue Garbaklut washcloth. Yarn: Drops Paris, 100% cotton, needles 4 mm).

The Fascinating World of Coins

Friday, 14 August 2015. It’s astonishing to think that later this year, the Penny Black stamp will mark its 175. Anniversary. A thoroughly British innovation, the Penny Black is well known as the world’s first postage stamp but its introduction marked another significant event - it was the very moment when uniform postal fees were first introduced, a concept which would spread across the globe and is still as popular today as it was all that time ago. Indeed, so important was the service that upon his ac...
