The background paintings in old Warner Brothers cartoons were a huge influence on my art, and I always assumed they were a group effort under the guidance of the immortal Chuck Jones. The style was the work of one man: Maurice Noble. He’s the most influential artist whose name I never knew. Check out this great short audio documentary from 99% Invisible! It was so much fun working on the illustrations for the book. Lexi is a very funny and lovable character, and I really identified with her, as I was a fellow grade-school-music-class-humbug.
