Epicurus wrote against the Stoics, who held that to be free one had to hold pleasure and pain of no account, since both depend on factors beyond one's control. Epicurus held that, since all we can know comes from the senses, and the senses announce pleasure to be good, pleasure is all the good we can know. Epicurus is said to have been sick often.
