In the words of Edlana, 26 years old:. My husband left me to go work in the sugar cane fields. I had to move in with my father. I was pregnant. I went into labor alone in my father’s hut. Safer Motherhood in Rural Ethiopia. VHP was founded by Margaret Migs Muldrow, MD. As a young girl, she lived in southwestern Ethiopia, where her parents worked to establish educational, agricultural, and medical programs. Migs spent much of her childhood helping in a small medical clinic, an experience that ultimately led her to a career in medicine.
