Friday, September 9, 2011. Suomenlinna Island near Helsinki Finland. A twenty minute ferry ride takes you from Helsinki to Suomenlinna Island, it's a wonderful place to spend a few hours or an entire day as I did. The island has a huge sea fortress which was begun by the Swedes in 1748. I enjoyed walking around exploring the island and I also did some birding.It was one of my favorite places on the trip. The first photo is of an impressive row of late 19th and early 20th Century buildings along the boulevard in Östermalm called Strandvägen (Beach Road) and is pretty amazing when enlarged to it's full size.
