Retired and cruising the cut in a narrowboat. October 31, 2011. We are now trapped west of the Crofton Locks as the closure has started. We still don’t know if we have chosen the right side to be on. We were moored at Milkhouse Water, near Pewsey, a very attractive place to be, but diabolical for internet coverage. So poor in fact that we gave up making any effort to log on. That couldn’t continue so we have moved on today. Today we did 5.57 Miles. Kennet and Avon Navigation. October 29, 2011. 303568 Mil...

Retired and cruising the cut in a narrowboat. November 27, 2011. We had heard good things of the local pub in Semington, the Somerset Arms. As our first night in the dry dock was Friday we had planned a walk down to the pub for a meal. It really is a super place, and deservedly busy because the food was very good and the price was reasonable. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and might go back on Monday for the quiz night. 305793 Miles, 2051 Locks, 197 Swing Bridges, 118 Lift Bridges, 58 Tunnels. 305793 Mil...

Retired and cruising the cut in a narrowboat. Well we are certainly going onto tidal rivers and we need some safety equipment, something to stop the boat in the event of engine failure. The anchor that came with the boat is this puny 10 pound effort. Puny 10 lb anchor with a metre of light weight chain attached. 14Kg Anchor with 7 metres of chain attached. The diameter of the warp needs to be 18mm for this anchor and chain. July 1, 2008 at 10:45 am. We learn something every day, Good luck on your travels.

Retired and cruising the cut in a narrowboat. On 16th April 2008 Darren the marina engineer took the boat out of the water for Blacking. On the way wto the slipway the engine juddered to a halt and when Darren hauled the boat out with his tractor the problem was discovered. The boat had picked up a spare tyre. The tyre was just about legal and fully encased the propeller, however it was surprisingly easy to remove. Boat on slip way - Car tyre fully encasing the propeller, the treads are just about legal.

Retired and cruising the cut in a narrowboat. We set off on our descent of the Caen Flight at 8.45, expecting to get down to the bottom around 2.30. In fact we tied up at the bottom of the Caen Hill sixteen at 12.00 exactly, thanks to two guardian angels, in the guise of Kennet and Avon volunteers Roger and Dave. Early or Late Ducklings. Today we did 1.66 Miles and 22 Locks. This entry was posted on Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 at 12:45 pm and is filed under Cruising. Kennet and Avon Navigation. You are ...

Retired and cruising the cut in a narrowboat. Ok we might get a few comments from some of the PC boating fraternity but it is something that we can live with if we get to use the bikes. We also wanted somewhere to take a rotary washing line pole, now no laughing but our final solution is:-. Washing post and towbar for bike rack. Well we have finally got the bike rack and bikes fitted. Bikes on Bike Rack. July 7, 2008 at 12:19 pm. September 14, 2009 at 12:33 pm. What a bloody brilliant idea! Karen, yes we...

Retired and cruising the cut in a narrowboat. September 26, 2011. On Sunday we walked along to the steam fayre at Crofton Pump House. It was the closing weekend of the summer for the Pumping Station and there was a weekend of activities. We had seen two steam tractors on their way to take part as we travelled from Hungerford to Great Bedwyn on Friday. I bought a pump out card from the shop hoping that it is more effective than the last one I bought there, which didn’t work when we were in dire need. ...
