Common Mysteries: March 2015
http://commonmysteries.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 7, 2015. A Feminist in Skirts. Over the last several years, my wardrobe has shifted from about half skirts to mainly skirts to, now, almost exclusively skirts. Sometimes this makes me feel a bit sheepish because I worry what people might think of me. After all, it's not all that normal for a 21st century American woman to wear only skirts. What if people think I'm that. I mean, skinny jeans? So I choose skirts, which I find absolutely comfortable. And you know what else? Stoneboat - Issue...
Common Mysteries: September 2016
http://commonmysteries.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html
Saturday, September 17, 2016. Ramona's birth story, four years late. Trigger warning: childbirth trauma, medical details. Disclaimer: I have no medical training. This post comes from my records, what I remember, conversations I had later with my doctor, surgeon, and anesthesiologist, and Google searches. We were first put in an exam room to wait for them to ready a birthing room for us. I told them I wanted to have as natural of a birth as possible and that I wanted a room with a tub. No problem. Moment ...
Common Mysteries: September 2015

Monday, September 14, 2015. L'Engle and the Child Still within Me. I've been re-reading Madeleine L'Engle's Walking on Water. With my mom, and this week, I read this passage from her chapter "A Coal in the Hand":. The way this hits me is as a call for grace- grace for ourselves, our selves. I must set the tearful, timid, selfish girl that I was at five upon my lap, let her rest her head upon my shoulder. A failure, doesn't void your motherhood and womanhood.". If I forget who I was, I truly am diminished...
Common Mysteries: Excess and Ashes
http://commonmysteries.blogspot.com/2016/02/excess-and-ashes.html
Wednesday, February 10, 2016. When is the last time you bought something for yourself? For me, it is usually no longer ago than "last week," and that is hard for me to admit. It is, I think, an admission of my selfishness. I buy not because I lack anything but because of some perceived deficiency or because there is some further convenience I crave or because of some less definable hankering that urges me to amass more things. I recently read an article in The Anglican Theological Review. Isn't someone w...
Common Mysteries: October 2015
http://commonmysteries.blogspot.com/2015_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, October 24, 2015. In the Face of Rejection. A few days each week, Zach watches Ramona for a chunk of hours so I can bike off to the library or Panera or Starbucks to have some solid writing and reading time. I spend much of this time reading poetry, writing and revising poetry, and occasionally blogging. In the last twelve months, I've written somewhere around 50 poems, I've sent groupings of these poems to 14 journals, and I've had a total of four poems accepted for publication. Visit my Etsy ...
Common Mysteries: January 2016
http://commonmysteries.blogspot.com/2016_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, January 20, 2016. Winter has finally settled deep over Madison, and as I bundle in wool and down, I return again to a sense of wonder. On a snowy night, my feet wander over ice-and-salt sidewalks, and tiny crystals float from clouds to rest upon my knit hat and mittens, and the silence is deep, all the way to my heart and gut. I am small again. I believe in Magic again, the Magic that was the root of Truth in my childhood. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). My poetry has appeared in:. Wisconsin Revie...

Common Mysteries: May 2015
http://commonmysteries.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 14, 2015. Putting it into Practice. I love to buy new stuff. I love wandering thrift store racks, searching for skirts with eclectic patterns, for vintage dresses, for name-brand purses. And I love to buy shoes on Zappos. I love waiting for packages from Amazon. It's really the best, pulling from cardboard something bright and shiny, something that still smells of warehouse and factory. I have been pointed to the blog Un-Fancy. So I was inspired to start by raiding my closet. I didn't do th...
