Kay Kendall, RNLI and Local History Museum. A lifeboat was first stationed in Withernsea in 1862 by the RNLI because of the large amount of shipping traffic entering the River Humber. The first boathouse was built near to the lighthouse, at the bottom of Hull Road, which is now the “Lifeboat Fish and Chips” restraunt. Withernsea’s Lighthouse was built over a period of 18 months back in 1892 because of the high number of shipwrecks that were occurring at Withernsea when vessels couldn’t see the lights at either Spurn or Flamborough. The original light was an 8 wick paraffin lamp, housed within an octaganol revolving lens. The lens itself weighed an incredible 2 tons and floated in a trough of 3 gallons of mercury. The Withernsea Lighthouse Trust has a policy of enabling all visitors to the museum to get the maximum benefit from their visit regardless of any possible access difficulties they may have i.e. :-. We will maintain the building in a manner that will allow access to all exhibits. We do realise, however, that access to the lamp room at the top of the lighthouse may be impracticable to some of our disabled visitors. Open for Summer Season. Free WiFi now available.
