Japachickyburgers: May 2012

Wim Wenders, 1985. I have just watched german filmmaker Wim Wenders’ documentary Tokyo-Ga. Wenders manages to open his film reasonably well. He eloquently describes not only his feelings toward Ozu’s films, but succinctly sums up their message, influence and importance, setting up a filmic contention that promises what could be a very interesting documentary based around a filmmaker’s personal journey. However, his inclusion of an overly long clip from Ozu’s Tokyo Story. I have been to Tokyo four times t...

Japachickyburgers: July 2012

The Melbourne International Film Festival kicks off next week and there are a grand total of nine Japanese films. Although some of which are co-productions). I will be endeavouring to see every single one, so stay tuned. Among the nine films showing are not one, not two, but THREE Takashi Miike films (seriously, that man is a one man film making factory) including his adaptation of the popular Nintendo DS game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Which looks like a lot of fun. In 3D, no less! Sion Sono, 2010.

Himura Kenshin (Takeru Sato) is an assassin of legendary skill who leaves behind his violent ways upon the advent of Japan’s Meiji Era. Wandering the land as an itinerant samurai, Kenshin offers protection to Kaoru Kamiya (Emi Takei, who we last saw in Takashi Miike’s For Love’s Sake. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Japachickyburgers: June 2012

Hirokazu Koreeda, 2004. The breakdown of the modern family unit is a recurring theme for many Japanese dramas, from the world renowned films of Yasujiro Ozu to the novels of Haruki Murakami. Director Hirokazu Koreeda takes on similar subject matter in his quietly moving 2004 film Nobody Knows. Norifumi Suzuki, 1973. At that time I had already seen his 1974 School of the Holy Beast. Sure, there might be a little too much sex and not quite enough fury and the acting is pretty woeful throughout, but this mo...

MIFFburger #8 (Final): HIMIZU. Sion Sono, 2011. And so my MIFF comes to a close for 2012 with the final film on my list, Himizu. A Sion Sono film, a director who has been getting a bit of attention in previous posts, I really was looking forward to this one, especially since it has been a bit of a wait. The film has been available on DVD overseas for quite a while now, and info on it has been popping up in my facebook feed from UK's Third Window Films. While Mozart's familiar Requiem. Accompanies restrai...

Berserk: Egg of the King. ベルセルク覇王の卵 Toshiyuki Kubooka, 2012. Movie would be bearable because they will condense it into film length and drop all the filler right? The film is set an unspecified kingdom/land, but a blind man could see the medieval. A mysterious “dude looks like a lady” warrior with an equally mysterious egg necklace. It is from this McGuffin that our film takes its name and not much else. At least give me a double bill! Or something. But then, maybe it is more self aware than I’...And Jul...
