~Loose Ends In My Mind~: Racing for the Right Name

Thursday, March 6, 2008. Racing for the Right Name. The article “From African to African American” written by Simitherman describes how difficult it is to name a race. It seems to me that choosing a name for a race would be quite simple. An important figure of that race denotes a “group name” and moves on. Our history, however, shows that it is much more complicated than this. It is through the same respect that you address a person by their appropriate ethnic title. For example my friend is Peruvian...

Everything Has Beauty but Not Everyone Sees It. Friday, January 25, 2008. Reflective Essay (January 25). Was walking through the hallways after lunch on a Wednesday, struggling to find the sponsor teacher for the chess club that I had just been informed existed at my school. The fact that I was lost is crazy now that I recall this story because I’d been at the high school 3 years and still couldn’t remember which classrooms were in basement one versus basement two! 8221; Of course I said “Huh? Three Engl...

Everything Has Beauty but Not Everyone Sees It. Friday, January 18, 2008. Response Blog January 18th. How do I explain this to a person who is not fluent in English if I cannot give a reason to these bizarre rules myself? I couldn't agree more: we certainly need to pay attention to the way we use language. I think much of the time we're taking for granted, as you say, the words we use and the ways we use them. Definition of a word, it seems foolish to claim that such and such is the.

Thursday, January 31, 2008. Exercising the Ethnographic Perspective. Pearl to be inducted into National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. In regards to the cultural issues, the article is very brief and vague. It is evident that being accepted into a Jewish hall of fame is a cultural matter because of religion. It would have been beneficial to the readers, as well as the overall article, if the reporter would have dug deeper into this subject. Who are some influential people in this hall of fame? Interviewing ...

When Steward describes good writing he goes into the details of employing action verbs, concrete nouns, keeping adjectives at a minimum, and even giving your reader a break every now and then. Steward also says, “If you can’t write clearly, concisely, and interestingly, how can you communicate the message you want you’re public to grasp and understand? How can they begin to draw conclusions on persuading them? April 17, 2008 at 7:26 PM. The most imp...

Friday, February 8, 2008. Dialect and our Society. To be completely honest I didn't realize linguistic profiling was such a prevalent issue. When I watched the video "Do You Speak American? I was shocked and disturbed. I did not realize that people would discriminate against your race just based off of the sound of your voice. There is the question of why they are doing it; is it for their business so that no one moves out when one moves in, or is it just because they themselves are racist?
