Artifact Adventures — Whaling Harpoon Cannon Stock
http://artifactadventures.com/post/73675691102/whaling-harpoon-cannon-stock
A New Yorker’s search for history. Whaling Harpoon Cannon Stock. Muzzle-loading harpoon cannon and gunner (1911). More often than not, unknown artifacts are ill-fated and considered worthless. However, a tiny bit of knowledge can turn that notion around. It did for me. Kongsberg model 490 II harpoon cannon stock. Detail of the blast guard and chain. The spring-loaded chain pulled an ignition pin to set off the cannon. Had lent me a book on Ernest Shackleton (my favorite explorer) and his attempt to cross...
Artifact Adventures — Late 1920s Harmonica
http://artifactadventures.com/post/82612232400/late-1920s-harmonica
A New Yorker’s search for history. Several months ago, my eyes fell upon a little harmonica at an NYC flea market. It was rusted in spots and appeared to be an early model judging from its wooden comb. The harmonica read “Auto-Valve-Harp” with the maker’s mark M. Hohner of Germany. What did appear were some similar-looking models but they bore a more modern typeface on the topside. Similar Auto-Valve-Harp model (top cover). My Auto-Valve-Harp model (topcover). On underside, these models looked almost ide...

http://artifactadventures.com/post/76287629144/diy-tabletop-for-a-cast-iron-frame
A New Yorker’s search for history. DIY: Tabletop for a Cast Iron Frame. Building a tabletop by hand. When one builds something by hand, a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction arises. When the building material is hardwood, that feeling is strengthened. I started this project because a close friend needed a desk and as such, the desk needed to be something sturdy and timeless. Antique cast iron table frame. Rock Maple ¾ inch planks. Cutting the planks down to size with a fine-toothed saw. Securing t...

19th Century Hatmaker
19th Century hats were made of sheep's wool, beaver and rabbit pelts pressed into felt. Among the causes of the American Revolution was the rage the colonists felt at the high import tax on hats from England, among other duties. Hat revivals come with such things as popular movie characters. The 1930s -style Indiana Jones hat and th...

Napoleon called us a nation of shopkeepers. The remark would have been infinitely more degrading if he had called us a nation of hawkers, but certainly quite as true, for there is not one portion or spot of this island but is overrun with them.’ [1]. Mayhew suggests that only a small proportion of hawkers and costermongers we...
