From 2008.igem.org. Genetic Network Generating Spatial Patterns Through Cell-Cell Communication. And Controlled Information Processing. Towards an in-vivo self organizing system. Initiation of the project. The system can sense the relative amounts of two input molecules. Using a pre-defined set of rules, which was selected on its ability to generate spatial patterns, the cell can then express its final state by emitting red or green fluorescence and transmit its state to its neighbors. 2008; BASU et al.

From 2008.igem.org. Since the emergence of Synthetic Biology. Our project sets the foundation for future research in engineered multi-cellularity by pursuing electrical and peptide signalling, and cellular self-differentiation through spontaneous spatial patterning. Using the amino acid glutamate as our 'neurotransmitter', we have successfully demonstrated a voltage response in bacterial cells. This is a first step in the direction of engineering multicellular behaviour.
