Most of the Typographics festival will take place at The Cooper Union, in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Cooper Union’s Foundation Building. Founded as a tuition-free college by philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, the school is the alma mater of many noteworthy typographers and lettering artists including Herb Lubalin, Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast, and Lou Dorfsman. It is one of the most fundamental conventions in Latin typeface design that verticals are made thicker than horizontals. Designers that have challenged this rule often delight in and emphasize the outrageous strangeness of letters made thick and thin in the ‘wrong’ places. So is ‘reversed contrast’ just a recurring but ultimately useless provocation? The name of this conference was coined by Herb Lubalin and Aaron Burns, whose company, ITC, changed the industry in the middle of the 20th century. By focusing on the designers behind the typefaces (paying them decent royalties), and creating new concepts of distribution (unbundling from machines and licensing to multiple companies), they created a legacy that still proves inspirational to type designers and type foundries today.
