Topeka: Bubble Puppy : Hot Smoke & Sassafras
http://topeka.blogspot.com/2010/05/bubble-puppy-hot-smoke-sassafras.html
Friday, May 14, 2010. Bubble Puppy : Hot Smoke and Sassafras. Bubble Puppy hails from the great state of Texas, home to such rock legends as ZZ Top. And The 13th Floor Elevators. In 1969 they committed "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" to vinyl and managed to score a Top 20 pop hit with it. They followed it up with an album that failed to go anywhere and promptly folded. I first learned of Bubble Puppy while reading the rock bible, Rock and the Pop Narcotic. Van Morrison is classic and has some amazing tunes, bu...

Topeka: American Gypsy : Golden Ring
http://topeka.blogspot.com/2010/03/american-gypsy-golden-ring.html
Monday, March 1, 2010. American Gypsy : Golden Ring. This one's hard to classify. There are flutes and a string section, and the whole thing has a close, dark feel to it, but there's also some upbeat funk and scatting going on. I think it falls somewhere between psychedelia and soft rock; between Santana. It's tough to say. Then they slow it down and do it all again. It trips and grooves, it's alternately spooky and funky, which doesn't seem like it would work, but they really make it go. MIA - Bird Flu.

Topeka: Bikini Machine : Monkey Bum Bum Boogie
http://topeka.blogspot.com/2010/05/bikini-machine-monkey-bum-bum-boogie.html
Friday, May 21, 2010. Bikini Machine : Monkey Bum Bum Boogie. Okay, aside from having one awesome song name, what does this song have going for it? Well, first of all, it's by Bikini Machine, a French band named for the titular contraption in the camp flick Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine. There's not much on the interwebs about them, alas, but they do have a few albums out. Their sound is electronic-oriented dance rock, similar to Hot Chip. But they lean more towards the pop spectrum. Party Ben / Ra...

Topeka: Edwin Birdsong : Cola Bottle Baby
http://topeka.blogspot.com/2010/05/edwin-birdsong-cola-bottle-baby.html
Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Edwin Birdsong : Cola Bottle Baby. Okay, now, if you've been paying attention, you should recognize this tune. That's because Daft Punk. Sampled it for their awesome "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". Edwin Birdsong. Was a minor player in the 70's funk field with his song "Rapper Dapper Snapper" that's also been sampled a bit. Tracks from the same period. I really don't have much more to say about it. It's a fun track, though, and leads off Edwin's 1979 self-titled album. John Gre...

Topeka: John Gregory : Six Million Dollar Man
http://topeka.blogspot.com/2010/05/john-gregory-six-million-dollar-man.html
Friday, May 7, 2010. John Gregory : Six Million Dollar Man. The problem with John Gregory, aside from his having two first names, is that there are a lot of them out there. There are all sorts of John Gregorys and a bunch of them are musicians. But the John Gregory I'm. Talking about is the British composer and arranger from the 60's and 70's who also recorded albums under the pseudonym "Chaquito". And man, could this guy arrange the heck out of a tune. S theme for The Six Million Dollar Man. You can lis...

They perform all sorts of tunes, from old swing standards like " In the Mood. To more modern tunes like " Heart of Glass. Walk Like an Egyptian. And " Crazy in Love. As well as some originals.
