Larks Tongues In Aspic: February 2006
http://larkstonguesinaspic.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html
Larks Tongues In Aspic. Watching Watches Watch Time. or the Horrors of Horology. Monday, February 27, 2006. My first watch on eBay, a Poljot Strela. This was perhaps my best purchase: with postage and handling, €104.60. Damn did I luck out. I remember that it ended at a strange time, something like 11 AM on a Sunday. I hadn't started using sniper software and my reserve was €127.76, so I was very happy to not have spent that much. The story behind this watch is a bit more complex than my previous Poljot.

Crossing the line of self parody. Rule of law…. March 1, 2009 in Finance. 8230; doesn’t seem to apply any more, according to Harriet Harman. Shameful. Dangerous for all of us, but also for them – the court of public opinion may not be too keen on their pension arrangements, and that could be the least of their problems. 21st Century Schizoid Man. Crossing the line of self parody. Inflation to the rescue? February 16, 2009 in Finance. Increase the inflation target to 4%, argues[1] Tim Leunig of the LSE. I’m not sure if the central banks will officially change their targets, but high inflation seems likely in the medium term regardless. 1] Dr Leunig does undermine his argument somewhat with this statement:. But central banks have far more credibility now than in the past. I don’t have much confidence in them. Their failure. Ireland and the Euro.

Crossing the line of self parody. March 22, 2009 in Computers. Novelty is, to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, the computer industry’s oldest invention. Rubbish. I’ve nothing against Cloud Computing. Per se[1]. I just wish companies, no doubt staffed by. Would stop pretending this is something new. It’s not. It’s just the 40 year old idea of a computer bureau with a fancier interface, and less COBOL. Of all companies, IBM should know this! 1] Though I do love this quote. 21st Century Schizoid Man.

Crossing the line of self parody. June 26, 2009 in Computers. Upgraded the OS on my home computers recently after getting tired of the limitations of the old versions. The original Xandros was OK I suppose for an attempt at a mass-market OS, once one figured out how to run a terminal and use it properly! Time to move on. New choice is Eeebuntu. I went for base 3.0 and it is excellent. The good:. More sensible OS disk management means I have more software installed and still reasonable space left. I’...

Crossing the line of self parody. Some interesting links (4). March 7, 2009 in Computers. A couple of posts on technology innovation here. The Lehman collapse has sown a sense of terror about creditors losing money on any bank bonds they hold. The only way truly to remove that terror would be for the government to persuade investors that banks are so healthy they cannot collapse or promise to protect creditors if they do. I would humbly suggest another option, namely that the banks should actually be.

Crossing the line of self parody. Rather late, don’t you think? March 1, 2009 in Finance. Wants to change the MPC’s remit:. Professor Blanchflower also questioned whether the benchmark CPI index was the right tool for the MPC to measure inflation, because it does not take house prices into account. He suggested that including house prices could have helped the MPC to justify rate cuts sooner. I wonder if he made a fuss about this when appointed in June 2006? Incompetent, and couldn’t see the danger.
