Getting a college education from a country location circa 1900 was an exceedingly rare occurrence. The Bussey Community Effort, a weekly newspaper whose first issue was published March 12, 1943, was founded “to keep service people in touch with community news.” 647 servicemen and women received the paper free. Below is the masthead from a 1944 edition of the newspaper founded and edited by E. C. McClure. The below photo was also copied from the Des Moines Register. The Bussey paper was printed in the print shop of the Knoxville Journal – Knoxville was a town near to Bussey.
