beyond the dogma: March 2011

God, Theology, Student Ministry and Leadership (and a whole bunch of other stuff I'm trying to figure out). Thursday, March 31, 2011. SOLO: Job 42:7-13 (Be careful throwing God's name around). You can read today's passage by clicking here. I referenced this in yesterday's blog, but I wanted to dive into it a little bit more. In the King James version I learned as a child it says "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.". The heart of the third commandment. Be very careful what you tie G...

beyond the dogma: March 2010

God, Theology, Student Ministry and Leadership (and a whole bunch of other stuff I'm trying to figure out). Wednesday, March 24, 2010. Ten years ago today I was a nervous wreck. Carrie and I were getting ready to go out of town for a few days and I had about a billion things to do. I remember surprisingly little except my emotions: they were a shotgun blast of nerves and excitement. The 25th was going to be a pretty big deal! Not smart when you need to be up at 7 the following day. Subscribe in a reader.

beyond the dogma: March 2009

God, Theology, Student Ministry and Leadership (and a whole bunch of other stuff I'm trying to figure out). Tuesday, March 17, 2009. Why blame the dark for being dark? It is far more helpful to ask why the light isn’t as bright as it could be." — Rob Bell (Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith). As for me, I’m going to nurse my toe back to health and pray that I will never blame the dark, but instead I’ll ask “Is my light shining? Sunday, March 15, 2009. Saturday, March 14, 2009. At the feet of a ...

God, Theology, Student Ministry and Leadership (and a whole bunch of other stuff I'm trying to figure out). Monday, August 31, 2009. Poor Thomas gets such a bad rap, simply because he wants to see with his own eyes to all the miracle of Jesus' resurrection. Can you blame him? He wasn't willing to be told about it. He wanted to live it. He wanted the experience. And until that happened he was going to base his belief on what he had last seen-Jesus dead! I firmly believe that the vast majority of agnostics...

beyond the dogma: Matthew 1
http://beyondthedogma.blogspot.com/2013/03/matthew-1.html
God, Theology, Student Ministry and Leadership (and a whole bunch of other stuff I'm trying to figure out). Monday, March 25, 2013. After reading through Matthew 1-3 today, here are a couple of things I observed. How amazing is it that the son of God was from a line of people that included liars, thieves, adulterers, murderers, self-absorbed people whose overwhelming qualities were more evil than good. What a redemption story! Where we come from matters. Is there something to the number 14? Captivated by...

God, Theology, Student Ministry and Leadership (and a whole bunch of other stuff I'm trying to figure out). Monday, January 31, 2011. SOLO Day 8 – Leviticus 4:32-35. According to Merriam-Webster, absolution. Is "the act of absolving; a remission of sins". The Absolution-Offering was the payment for sin. In other words, a lamb would serve as the sacrifice. Honestly, I can agree that it's inhumane and dark. That's what sin is, and that's how it must be absolved. I've had several other people mention what a...

God, Theology, Student Ministry and Leadership (and a whole bunch of other stuff I'm trying to figure out). Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Takin some time off, so I won't be posting over the next several days. This is one of the perks of saving most of that vaca until the end of the year ;). Just wanted to give a heads up. Peace to you! Tuesday, September 29, 2009. To Think and Know:. How complacency breeds disillusionment. 1 Awe and wonder: God’s redemptive plan is amazing. 1 Be more sensitive to hearin...

beyond the dogma: Does a court decision determine where your hope lies??
http://beyondthedogma.blogspot.com/2013/03/does-court-decision-determine-where.html
God, Theology, Student Ministry and Leadership (and a whole bunch of other stuff I'm trying to figure out). Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Does a court decision determine where your hope lies? I do my best not to make strong political statements on facebook or social media because (total transparency here) I tend to judge people that do so. So I confess my hypocrisy right from the get go and choose to put this on my blog to maintain some small element of integrity. I feel quite certain love is a better way!
