It’s Like Ice Cream | architecturally
https://architecturally.wordpress.com/2012/06/13/its-like-ice-cream
It’s Like Ice Cream. June 13, 2012. My old A-Level maths teacher used to spend a lot of time bemoaning the complexity of the world. I guess when you’re that in to equations you just want to simplify everything down. In particular he had a gripe with ice cream. Every few weeks he would announce something like this to the class:. 8220;Do you have any idea how much time is wasted choosing ice cream? Also, I like choice. Old Architects’ Journals | architecturally
https://architecturally.wordpress.com/2012/06/04/old-architects-journals
Old Architects’ Journals. June 4, 2012. I think I have made a mistake. A couple of months ago I cleared out all of my old architectural journals and sent them off for recycling. And then they were gone. 15 years of hoarding ended. Now all I have are a couple of new RIBA Journals and a lot more free space. Things are different now. I taught last year and it was rare to see a journal, even in its complete form, much less cut up. I guess the equivalent now is Google images, online subscriptions, and iPads.

My First Time | architecturally
https://architecturally.wordpress.com/2012/11/30/my-first-time
November 30, 2012. They say you never forget your first time. That’s true for me. I’ve got a photo of mine. Here’s where it happened:. Thursday 15th April 1999, mid-morning ish, the Guggenheim, New York. As I stood here a fresh-faced second year architecture student, still buzzing from my American-sized coffee and donut breakfast, this was the first time that I began to connect the lectures and the studio work that I had been struggling with over the past 18 months with architecture in wider sense. You a...

My Favorite T-Shirt | architecturally
https://architecturally.wordpress.com/2012/08/21/my-favorite-t-shirt
August 21, 2012. My friend gave me this T-shirt for my birthday a couple of years ago. He (thinks he) is a ninja, so that’s cool. Architects *rolls eyes*. I started off just appreciating the joke. Sure – being a ninja must be way harder than being an architect. For a start there’s the long training, the dedication, the isolation from friends and family. Hang on, this might not be as simple as I first thought. 8216;the practice of climbing a tree and camouflaging oneself within the foliage’. Click to shar...

Are We Cool? | architecturally
https://architecturally.wordpress.com/2012/09/05/are-we-cool
September 5, 2012. I think I’ve detected a change over the last few years. One of the most unexpected, but most welcome, parts of being an architect seems to be happening less and less. You know the type of thing – when you tell someone new that you’re an architect and they think that’s really cool. I seem to be getting a lot less of that. It hurts a bit. There seem to me to be 3 possible explanations:. We are getting less cool. We were not cool in the first place, and people are gradually realising it.

Caffeine Start | architecturally
https://architecturally.wordpress.com/2012/05/23/caffeine-start
May 23, 2012. I’m not ashamed of my addiction. Admittedly no one should ever be proud of cracking open the Nescafe; but other than that in my mind it’s all good. I’m an architect, I need coffee. I can’t understand architects that can survive without it. They must have some kind of superhuman stay-awake gene that I’m lacking, but for me caffeine is fuel.
