Pripyat was founded on 4 February 1970 to serve the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The Polissya hotel is one of the tallest buildings in the abandoned city of Pripyat. It was built in mid-1970s to house delegations and guests visiting the Chernobyl Power Plant. Currently, the hotel is half-ruined. The hotel is famous because it is featured in the video game Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Swimming Pool ‘Lazurny’.

Feintuchwerke F.F. Koswig. Finsterwalde grew with the cloth industry from the idyllic village into a major manufacturing city. In 1886 they build this ‘Tuchfabrik FF Koswig’. The factory kept expanding until 1913 when the last buildings was added to the site. In the factory quality fabrics were manufactured. But it took almost 40 years before the first soldiers were stationed. In 1881 the army is quartered in a old textile factory. In an agricultural surrounding far away from the cities in Belgium, Raymond Coutrez build this radio astronomy station. It has 48 dishes used for the study of variations in solar activity. The resolution is approximately 3.5 x 7.0 minutes arc. It observed the solar flare of 9 April 1956. On the photo above you can see the Hale-Bopp comet crossing the observatory in 1997. The Chernobyl disaster was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history in terms of cost and casualties. The 30 km Zone of Alienation was established soon after the disaster.
