30 days on $30 of food: Day 14: Hope for Kampala
http://30days-2013.blogspot.com/2013/08/day-14-hope-for-kampala.html
30 days on $30 of food. Sunday, August 11, 2013. Day 14: Hope for Kampala. I'm kind of at a loss for words tonight, very tired and growing a bit irritable from the hunger, to be honest. But my heart turns toward vivid memories of this slum settlement in Kampala, Uganda, where our newest "Children's Hope Center" project is currently in development. As I recollect their struggles I witnessed first hand, my complaints are silenced immediately. Here's a scene from our classroom I shot on my last visit this y...

30 days on $30 of food: Day 27: The missing drop
http://30days-2013.blogspot.com/2013/08/day-27-missing-drop.html
30 days on $30 of food. Saturday, August 24, 2013. Day 27: The missing drop. I'm dedicating day 27 to this girl I met in the Secunderabad Landfill "Scavengers' Colony" as I call it. It's one of the several slum colonies on the edge of this massive city landfill serving the metro Hyderabad, India area. Most people have never heard of this city. However, it's among the world's 40 most populous cities at an estimated 8.2 million residents. If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one. We ourse...

30 days on $30 of food: Day 29: It's different for children
http://30days-2013.blogspot.com/2013/08/day-29-its-different-for-children.html
30 days on $30 of food. Monday, August 26, 2013. Day 29: It's different for children. I wonder about those who go on in this kind of "challenge" indefinitely as a way of life. For the adults living in extreme poverty, I can see where they could be strong and endure through the hardships and the hunger in the interest of survival and sacrificing for their children. However, what I cannot fathom, is how the children endure it. Their challenge in these conditions is infinitely more difficult. I was ready to...

30 days on $30 of food: Day 28: The real challenge
http://30days-2013.blogspot.com/2013/08/day-28-real-challenge.html
30 days on $30 of food. Sunday, August 25, 2013. Day 28: The real challenge. I'm dedicating day 28 to these kids I met in the slums of Kampala, Uganda who endure some of the worst living conditions I've ever witnessed. We've just begun an education and nutrition outreach here, another one of our " Children's Hope Centers. To try to improve their lives. A mother and her daughters make their way back from fetching their daily water supply, which is probably not from a safe source. On the final stretch!

30 days on $30 of food: Day 30: Finish line
http://30days-2013.blogspot.com/2013/08/day-30-finish-line.html
30 days on $30 of food. Tuesday, August 27, 2013. Day 30: Finish line. I'm utterly grateful for the last-minute outpouring of support that not only helped me reach my goal, but surpass it! Tonight we got up to $10,750 for 21 scholarships! Tomorrow, I'm leaving on a journey that will take me to two of the project locations where we reach out to children recovering from child labor and malnutrition, helping them become integrated into a life of wholeness in education, nutrition and mentorship, through our ...

30 days on $30 of food: Day 17: A difficult day
http://30days-2013.blogspot.com/2013/08/day-17-difficult-day.html
30 days on $30 of food. Wednesday, August 14, 2013. Day 17: A difficult day. I'm not giving up, because there are still kids out there like him. A boy I met in the Payatas Landfill scavengers colony of Manila. He's 14 and has been working at this trash sorting facility since he was 8, he told me through an interpreter. He wears only flip-flops and had open sores on his legs. This is the reality of child labor which is rampant in the developing world. Wait," you say, "I'm not contributing to the problem!

This is a huge step forward- bringing our total way up to 13 scholarships now funded! And we lack just $85 to reach the 14th scholarship! I'm asking you to consider chipping in $5, $10 or $15 to help us knock out this $85! Thank you so much for your support. It was "bonus egg day" (with 48 eggs, I get an extra egg alm...

30 days on $30 of food. Monday, August 19, 2013. Day 22: If we work together. As I round the corner into the final week, I'm feeling relatively strong and definitely grateful for all of your support. Thanks to many of you overcoming indifference, to believe that even a small donation can make a big difference, we've surpassed the $7,500 mark! This is fantastic and I couldn't be happier with your participation and support! Would you consider chipping in whatever you can afford, even if it's just $5? Despe...

30 days on $30 of food: Day 21: Extreme poverty
http://30days-2013.blogspot.com/2013/08/day-21-extreme-poverty.html
30 days on $30 of food. Sunday, August 18, 2013. Day 21: Extreme poverty. I'm dedicating day 21 to this little boy I met in the Thapathali slum settlement of Kathmandu, Nepal. I've made a few visits to this colony where we're in the process of launching a new " Children's Hope Center. Many will ask, so what's the difference between this and the problems of the homeless of my (Western) country? A shocking statistic that puts things into quick perspective is that. Often times relatives are lured with an at...
