Wednesday, December 9, 2009. Why bad data management is dangerous. There's a fascinating article in The Economist this week highlighting the role played by poor data management practices in exacerbating the global financial crisis last year. Data integrity issues, the lack of a "single version of the truth" and hand-built Excel calculations are phenomena common to many companies in many industries, but the effects described in this article. Can truly be described as earth-shattering. 10 SQL Azure Gotchas.

Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Master Data Managment; a succinct explanation. Master Data Management (MDM) is one of those terms that have been hovering around in the data management background for a number of years. However, it looks like its time is drawing near: the next version of SQL Server will feature MDM capabilities out of the box, a move that should bring the associated techniques and technologies into the limelight. I could go on, but I came across this article. Posted by Paul at 21:38. Firstly and m...

360Data: Being Resourceful - Organize, protect, connect and present your information
http://blog.360data.nl/2012/05/being-resourceful.html
Friday, May 25, 2012. A client of mine has a system in development that consists of a normal, multi-user .NET desktop application plus a number of services that manage some occasional heavy-duty background processing on the database server. The problem is, when the services are running, the application performance grinds to a standstill and users are left for minutes on end waiting for their application to react. My customer decided to try the Resource Governor feature. We spent almost two days in total ...

360Data: Windows 8: Neither fish nor flesh? - Organize, protect, connect and present your information
http://blog.360data.nl/2012/03/windows-8-neither-fish-nor-flesh.html
Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Windows 8: Neither fish nor flesh? Now that the Windows 8 Consumer Preview has arrived. We have a better idea of what Microsoft has in mind with the next version of the OS. I say "version", but this is quite obviously more than just a version, it's a radical break with the past at every level from the UI surface to the technical underpinnings. What does it mean for the rest of us? Which is not to say that Windows 8 is in any way a failure. This feels to me like the right mov...

Thursday, May 28, 2009. Seven steps to heaven. The Windows 7 Release Candidate build. Has been humming away happily on a test PC here for the last month, and I'm impressed up to now. So much so, in fact, that I'm very tempted to install it on my main working machine. Like I said before, it's stable, lightning fast, and has a host of useful improvements and additions. All I need to do now is persuade my customers to upgrade to Win7 pronto. Posted by Paul at 23:12. So long as we're being technical. Type da...

http://blog.360data.nl/2009_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 30, 2009. A tiny bit behind-the-times with this news item because of holidays in between, but it's worth mentioning that the first service pack for SQL Server 2008 is now available. There's a useful article on the MSDN blogs. Posted by Paul at 23:34. I'll be evaluating the build myself in the coming weeks and am curious to see how it differs from the beta. The most interesting addition to the RC build was revealed a couple of days ago - XP Mode. Killer feature that will finally prompt bus...

Sunday, March 29, 2009. Credit where credit's due. Many IT professionals have an unfortunate tendency to look down their noses at MS Access databases, and to treat the product and the applications running on it as being beneath their notice. This is a shortsighted and unhelpful point of view, however, as rightly or wrongly many, many businesses are using Access to help them get work done. As IT experts, that should always be our primary focus, too - how do we help people get work done? As a pure data sto...

360Data: Slow Progress - Organize, protect, connect and present your information
http://blog.360data.nl/2012/05/slow-progress.html
Thursday, May 17, 2012. I spent a frustrating morning with a client recently trying to use a Progress database as the source for an Integration Services package. The fix, as is so often the case, was simple, but I figured it was worthwhile documenting it here. I'm afraid that it's a more technical post than I usually put here, but if I can save someone else the same trouble we had then it'll be worthwhile. Google searching the problem wasn't very encouraging. Posted by Paul at 16:32. Head in the Cloud.
