Lesley Powell: From my Easel. Monday, July 27, 2015. All Roads Lead to Rome. Pont Julien (photo (c) Lesley Powell). I wrote in my last post about how the Romans left a lasting mark on the landscape of Provence. It seems that I cant get away from the Roman theme- this time I am writing about the stone bridge called Pont Julien, which was built by the Romans. It is between modern day Bonnieux and Roussillon. Lesley Powell: From my Easel. Wednesday, July 30, 2014. 13 x 7, oil on linen. C) Lesley Powell 2014. During the recent workshop with Maggie Siner. We painted inside one of the beautiful perched villages of Provence. These ancient villages- with their steep cobbled streets, odd shaped buildings, beautiful old facades, and cheerful window boxes- present a number of intriguing painting motifs. Such a feast for the eyes! It can be difficult to narrow your focus. Saturday, July 26, 2014. C) Lesley Powell 2014.

Lesley Powell: From my Easel: Ochre

Lesley Powell: From my Easel. Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Ochre Cliffs, Roussillon, France. C) Lesley Powell 2014. I have recently returned from France, where I visited the village of Roussillon for the first time. Roussillon's claim to fame is its fabulous colored soils, which for decades supplied the entire world with ochre pigments. In fact, it was a scientist from Roussillon, Jean-Eteinne Asteir, who. Developed the process back in the 1780's for making ochre pigment from the soils of his native region.

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that I am a great admirer of the Spanish Impressionist painter Joaquin Sorolla. I have long wanted to visit the museum that was once his home, and I was thrilled with the photos my friend sent me from her visit. I immediately wanted to share them with you! Tuesday, May 26, 2015.

Lesley Powell: From my Easel: Villages in the Vaucluse

Lesley Powell: From my Easel. Sunday, August 9, 2015. Villages in the Vaucluse. C) John Graham, 2015. Painting architecture can be quite difficult. So many perspective lines, so many opportunities to go wrong! Conventional wisdom tells us that if an architectural element is wrong, the viewer feels immediately off balance and knows something is amiss. Nonetheless, the villages of Provence turned out to be favorite motifs for the painters in our recent workshop group. (True confession:. C) Aeron Mack, 2015.

Lesley Powell: From my Easel. Saturday, August 1, 2015. C) Maggie Siner, 2015. During the recent workshop in France. Our fearless leader, Maggie Siner. Urged us on to work well into the nighttime. A full day of painting was not enough- the evening beckoned with nocturnes! Some of the most lovely and original work of the week came during these evening painting sessions. The top photo is one of Maggie's nocturnes, painted in the little hamlet where we stayed. Fantastic! Nobody does it like Maggie! The pain...
